Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Bobby Simmons made the most of his opportunity. Starting in the place of an injured Kerry Kittles, Simmons scored a career-high 30 points as the Los Angeles Clippers halted a streak of seven losses in season openers with a 114-84 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics. "Everyone wants to contribute and I feel I can contribute every night," Simmons said. "I think that because I put the work in over the summer. If coach calls on me, I'll be ready to start. But if not, I'll come off the bench." Simmons, whose previous career high of 24 points came against Seattle in the 2003-04 season finale, scored 18 points in the second half. He was 13-of-15 from the floor and added six rebounds and six assists for Los Angeles, which also snapped a six-game losing streak against Seattle. "Of course I feel this is a turnaround game for me with the opportunity to start," Simmons said. "I wanted to showcase the work I've done this year and that's what I think I did." "I knew he was a great physical player in the post and then he was hitting that mid-range shot," Clippers forward Elton Brand said. "I knew he could step it up and I was proud of him tonight. I'm just ready to move on and see what he can do in the next game." Brand hit his first four shots as Los Angeles never trailed, opening the game with a 14-3 run over the first six-plus minutes. Brand scored 15 of his 21 points in the first half. The Clippers shot 21-of-32 in the first half, including a fadeaway 3-pointer by Corey Maggette at the buzzer, to open a 60-41 lead. "They beat us in the paint," SuperSonics forward Rashard Lewis said. "They were making a lot of shots and weren't really missing and that hurt us a lot. And I think the main thing is we weren't getting back on defense." Seattle, which led the NBA in 3-pointers made and attempted last season, came out firing in the second half. Bothered by an ankle injury, Lewis scored six of his 24 points during a 13-4 run over the first 4:05 that reduced the deficit to 64-54. Chris Wilcox scored six points as Los Angeles responded with a 11-0 run over the next three minutes. Wilcox scored 15 points and Marko Jaric added 10 as all five starters for the Clippers scored in double figures. Ray Allen and Vladimir Radmanovic each scored 20 points for Seattle, which shot just 37 percent (30-of-81) and was outscored on the fast break, 16-2. "Honestly, we played terrible defense," Radmanovic said. "We allowed too many easy points in transition. When teams play like that against you, you have very little chance to do anything. ... I just think it was a lack of energy on our part. We've been together for over two years and we just can't let these kind of things happen."
