Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett got the Minnesota Timberwolves back in the game and Sam Cassell helped out his big man down the stretch. Garnett had 28 points, 20 rebounds and seven assists and Cassell added 19 points and 11 assists to lead the Timberwolves to a 99-93 victory over the New York Knicks in the season opener for both clubs. "He (Garnett) only had 28 and 20, seven assists and three blocks," said Minnesota coach Flip Saunders. "That's what's become an ordinary MVP night. KG was great in 39 minutes, Sam hit some big shots." With the Knicks leading, 30-23, late in the first quarter, Garnett made nine straight shots, including all seven in the second period, to give Minnesota a 58-51 halftime lead. The NBA MVP's 10th straight basket, a jumper from the top of the key on the first possession of the third quarter, extended the advantage to 59-51. "In the second quarter, KG was unconscious," said New York coach Lenny Wilkens. "He hit very difficult shots." The Knicks climbed back into the game behind Stephon Marbury and reserves Trevor Ariza and Mike Sweetney to pull even at 84-84 just over three minutes into the final period. But that's when Cassell and the defense took over in an ugly final eight minutes. Cassell, who made his first All-Star team last season, hit a jumper to break the tie and fed center Michael Olowokandi for a dunk. Cassell hit another jumper, then hit Olowokandi again for a short jumper and a 92-86 lead. After Garnett slammed home an alley-oop feed from Wally Szczerbiak, Cassell converted 3-of-4 free throws to extend the margin to 96-88 with 3:30 left. "It was a big win for us," said Cassell, who also committed seven turnovers. "It was very good to be back out there. The Knicks gave us a fight. Give them some credit. They made some shots early and they made some shots with hands in their face." On defense, the Knicks missed their last 12 shots over the final 7:57. "Our shot selection wasn't very good at times, so in the second half we didn't shoot it as well." Wilkens said. "We were just too quick to pull the trigger." Marbury had 27 points and 10 assists and Jamal Crawford, making his Knicks debut after being acquired from Chicago in a six-player deal this summer, scored 22 points. He shot 8-of-13 in the first half but just 2-for-8 for five points after halftime, taking several questionable shots. "I got quick with a couple of my shots late," Crawford said. "I need to take my time and get better. ... For the first real game I think we (Marbury and Crawford) played real well together. It is a long season and I am sure we will keep getting better and better." Troy Hudson scored eight points and hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second half for the Timberwolves, who have won 10 straight home openers. "We did a lot of good things out there," Hudson said. "We could've done some better things, but it's the first game of the season and we got our first win." Kurt Thomas added 11 points and 14 rebounds for New York.
