Game StoryNEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Don Nelson had to be happy with the way the Dallas Mavericks shared the ball. Jerry Stackhouse, Michael Finley and Dirk Nowitzki each had 19 points to lead six players in double figures as the Mavericks won for the second time in as many nights with a 106-91 decision against the New Orleans Hornets. The Mavericks beat the Hornets for the 10th consecutive time, spoiling New Orleans' season opener and Bryon Scott's debut as Hornets coach. The losing margin was the Hornets' largest in an opener since a 20-point home loss to Washington in 1989, their second season. "In my years of coaching, I've never seen my team come into another place on a home opener and win this easy," Nelson said. The Hornets, who played their first regular season contest as a member of the Western Conference since 1990, jumped out to a 14-8 lead midway through the first quarter before Dallas got hot. The Mavericks used a 22-5 run, opening a 30-19 lead on a 3-pointer by Jason Terry early in the second period. Terry scored 18 points. "We had a game under our belt," Nelson said of the Mavericks' 107-98 home victory Tuesday against Sacramento, "(That) helped us tonight. I felt more confident about this game than last night's." Dallas, the NBA's scoring leader the past three seasons, shot 54 percent (42-of-78) from the field and does not seem to miss All-Star point guard Steve Nash, who signed with Phoenix as a free agent. In two games, Terry and rookie Devin Harris have logged all the time at the point and combined for 37 points, 15 assists and two turnovers. "It's been a fun ride so far," Nowitzki said. "We have two guys who know how to pass and can shoot the ball or push the ball up the floor. They can make plays off the dribble. We can build off that. I think we have all the right pieces in place." Stackhouse, who is coming off the bench this season after being traded by Washington Wizards, scored eight points in a 13-3 run in the second half that gave the Mavericks an 87-69 advantage. "I love my team and I'm enjoying this role," Stackhouse said. "I'm able to come in and play my game." "Stack was great," Nelson said. "I love him as a sixth man. I've always loved him coming off the bench. I didn't have to burn up Finley's minutes with the way Stack played." Baron Davis scored 13 of his 25 points in the third quarter and Jamaal Magliore and David Wesley each added 11 for the Hornets, who had a five-game winning streak in season openers snapped. "All the things we have been working on the last four or five days ... it just seemed to go out the window," Scott said. "We didn't really defend them. It just seemed that a bunch of our guys had never seen it before, and that was disappointing." Both Davis and Magloire expressed offseason concerns about their team's commitment to improvement in its move to the Western Conference, but both had a softer stance Wednesday. "Right now if I did (have concerns), it's really irrelevant," Magloire said. "This is our team, Baron's and mine. But we're going to have to play and win, no matter what. I've been impressed with what I've seen in training camp. We have to play no matter what odds are against us." "(It's) just a bunch of little things that we need to clean up to make ourselves a better team," Davis said. "That's about it. We've got 81 more games. We're going to be a good team. We're definitely going to be a good team."
