Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning led the New Jersey Nets in what he hopes may be one of his last appearances with the team. Mourning scored two late baskets and Richard Jefferson was an assist shy of a triple-double as the Nets escaped with a 111-106 double-overtime victory over the Chicago Bulls. Earlier Friday, Mourning - who finished with 17 points and six blocks - asked New Jersey management to buy out his contract, enabling him to join a team with a better chance of winning a championship. Mourning broke a 103-103 deadlock, converting a pass from Jefferson with 83 seconds left in the second overtime. The next time down, he finished another Jefferson pass with an emphatic dunk to give the Nets a lead they did not surrender. "Richard and I talked in a timeout and I told him don't make those crosscourt passes, just put it in to me and I will go up and get it. He made those plays after that," Mourning said. Jefferson added 26 points, a career-high 21 rebounds and nine assists in 57 minutes for New Jersey, which led by as many as 27 in the first half. Jefferson did have 11 turnovers. "Stat-wise (this was) probably the best since high school, but forget stats, all that matters is that we got the win," Jefferson said. "He really came up big for us,and almost had a quadruple double," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "When Richard gets a catch on those inbound plays he has a great recognition and finished well." Guard Kirk Hinrich sparked Chicago's rally, scoring 17 of his career-high 34 points in a third quarter in which the Bulls outscored the Nets, 31-18. Rookie forward Luol Deng impressed in his NBA debut, scoring nine of his 18 points in the fourth quarter. "We shot horribly in the first half," Hinrich said. "In the second half we started to pick up the defense a bit. We got some stops and that got us back in the game. We have to start playing that way the whole game." "When I first got out there I was trying to get into a rhythm," said Deng, who also grabbed 10 rebounds. "Finally some plays when my way." Mourning came off the bench to score eight points in the Nets' 14-4 run to close out the first quarter. New Jersey scored the first 16 points of the second quarter to take a 41-15 lead. "I know what I can do and I know what my doctors think I can do," said Mourning, who is attempting a comeback after recieving a kidney transplant less than a year ago. "I just have to keep playing." "Being down by 20 really hurt us," Deng said. "We should not have been down that much in the first place." The Nets were decidedly better at the free-throw line, making 31-of-35 attempts, while the Bulls were just 16-of-27. "We came back and played better defense in the second half and had our chances to win, we just missed some free throws that hurt us," Chicago coach Scott Skiles said. "We should have won that game." After a 23-point loss to Miami in the opener Wednesday, New Jersey avoided going 0-2 for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. "I thought our guys showed a lot tonight," Frank said. "It was far from a perfect game. It would have been very easy on the road with the crowd and all to bail out when they made there comebacks." "We have been telling people how hard we play is not going to change, and as good as we were in the first half, we were just as bad in the second half," Jefferson said. "But we didn't give up, we will not make excuses for ourselves with who is here and who is not here." The Bulls were without center Eddy Curry and forward Antonio Davis, both of whom served the first of two-game suspensions stemming from an altercation in a preseason game against Washington on October 25.
