Game StoryMEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady made sure the Houston Rockets would not end a season-opening three-game road trip without a victory. McGrady scored 30 points and had nine assists as the Rockets overcame foul trouble to defeat the Memphis Grizzlies, 89-81. Jim Jackson added 14 points and eight rebounds and Juwan Howard chipped in 11 and nine for the Rockets, who opened the season with losses at Detroit and Toronto. "Well, game one was tough, but I think we're looking good," McGrady said. "A game like this feels good because this team is tough. We'll keep building." "I thought Tracy's passing was great," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "He definitely helps make the team more effective. We just were trying to get the ball in the hands of our best decision-maker." Yao Ming had just eight points amid constant foul trouble, but backup Dikembe Mutombo blocked six shots and helped hound the Grizzlies into shooting just 35 percent (26-of-74). "When you start to block a lot of shots and you challenge all of their shots, then I think you get confidence and it helped us build our momentum," said Mutombo, who became the fourth player in NBA history with 3,000 blocks. "That takes them out of their game." "(Mutombo) protected the paint," Van Gundy said. "He guarded a lot of guys with good quickness and he did a good job." Memphis coach Hubie Brown was disappointed his team did not take advantage of scoring opportunities. "We had 24 fast-break opportunities and only scored on seven of them," he said. "We also turned the ball over six times on the break. "We had a lot of 2-on-1s and 3-on-1s and turned the ball over. We had a lot of open shots from three and four feet out and we missed them. "It is very frustrating, especially (when) we knew that the game will be in the 80s. It is just frustrating." Memphis' Pau Gasol scored 14 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, but most of those came in the final minutes with the Rockets holding a comfortable lead. Bonzi Wells had 15 points for the Grizzlies, who made just 6-of-18 3-pointers while the Rockets went 9-of-17 from beyond the arc. "It might help to get away," said Wells, whose team failed to win either of its first two games at the new FedEx Forum. "With coming off (a 50-win) last season and opening a new building, maybe we've put some unneeded pressure on ourselves. We just need to go on the road and play our game." "Right now we're not on the same page. We're not gelling," said Grizzlies center Lorenzen Wright, who had two points on 1-of-9 shooting. "We have a lot of guys back that weren't with us in the preseason, and we gotta get going. We gotta start gelling." The start of the game was delayed more than 10 minutes because of a clock cable malfunction.
