Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The last time the Sacramento Kings got off to this type of start, they were a lottery team. The Kings fell to 0-3 for the first time in seven years with a 104-101 overtime loss to the Houston Rockets, who got 33 points, 12 rebounds and a series of big defensive plays from Yao Ming. Sacramento lost each stop of the "Texas Triangle" to open the season. It last began 0-3 in the 1997-98 season, which ended with a 27-55 mark and a trip to the lottery. It has made the playoffs every season since. "It was a tough loss," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "Their two main guys got it going, and we couldn't do anything to win." The Kings also dropped three straight games in the regular season for the first time since January 2003. "It was a big loss for us," Kings guard Mike Bibby said. "Houston came out and hit some big shots. We played a lot better, but we have to carry it to the next level." Yao had 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Rockets erased a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit. Houston also climbed out of a four-point hole early in overtime as Yao controlled the middle on the defensive end. "Tonight, we played very well," Yao said. "We took care of the ball, had a lot of assists and played like a team." "We got to see the real Yao for the first time this season," Rockets forward Maurice Taylor said. Tracy McGrady chipped in 23 points and 13 rebounds and Charlie Ward added a pair of 3-pointers in the extra session as the Rockets closed the contest with an 11-4 burst. "It was a big win. It showed great character in the team," McGrady said. "We just came out, played hard and executed great defense." Bibby led the Kings with 31 points but had just four over the final 17 minutes. Houston snapped a five-game losing streak to Sacramento and has won two in a row after opening the season with a pair of losses. The Kings displayed some poise after Houston rallied in regulation as Bibby and Miller buried jumpers in the opening 92 seconds of overtime. But Ward and Yao keyed an 8-0 run that put Houston in control. Yao had a bucket and Ward drained back-to-back 3-pointers for a 101-97 edge with 89 seconds left. "The one thing I love about Charlie is that he's got poise and he's got courage," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "So whatever Father Time has taken away, he can't take those two things away from him. He stepped up and shot confidently. He had the courage to make or miss, and I really like that about him." "The two times (Ward) got the threes, we made a couple of mistakes, defensively, and he made two big shots," Adelman said. "You've got to give him credit. He knocked them down." Sacramento led, 73-66, entering the fourth quarter but Houston rallied, tying the game on a dunk by Taylor with 2:58 to go. The Kings opened two-point leads twice in the fourth quarter, but Yao made two free throws with 83 seconds to go for a 93-93 tie. Houston's Tyronn Lue missed a jumper as time expired in regulation.
