Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- It appears Utah Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor made the right choice when he signed Carlos Boozer rather than pursuing free agent Kenyon Martin. Boozer had a double-double in the first half and finished with a season-high 30 points and 17 rebounds to help the Jazz improve to 3-0 with a 106-82 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Averaging 21.5 points through the first two games, Boozer scored 16 points, including six during a key run, and had 10 boards in the first half as Utah opened a commanding 60-34 lead. "I'm just trying to run the plays and get familiar with everybody," said Boozer, who scored 14 points in the first quarter. "They're doing a great job of getting me the ball in good positions to be successful." Andrei Kirilenko hit a pair of free throws with 3:14 left in the first quarter to give Utah a 21-15 lead and spark the decisive 19-5 surge. He hit another free throw just over five minutes later to cap the run. Kirilenko scored 11 of his 16 points in the first half and Raja Bell scored 10 over that stretch for Utah, which shot 55 percent (21-of-38) from the field while Denver struggled at 39 percent (15-of-39). "The game tonight was pretty easy," Kirilenko said. "They were a little tired and they didn't look like they wanted to play." "Denver really struggled, but that is just part of this business," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "We played hard, and when you play hard you have a chance to win." In each of its first three games, Utah has scored 100-plus points and won each contest by at least 20 points. Last season, it reached the century mark in just six games. "We're playing hard, executing, playing good team defense and we're sharing the ball offensively," Boozer said. "We still have a lot of work to do. We're off to a great start but we have another big one on Monday (at home vs. Denver)." Martin originally was scheduled to work out for Utah on the day Boozer signed his six-year, $68 million deal with the Jazz. The workout was canceled, and Martin ended up in Denver. Matched up against Boozer, Martin had 14 points and six rebounds in 36 minutes. "(There's) really not much to say when you get outplayed," Martin said. Olympian Carmelo Anthony shot just 2-of-13 in the first half and was benched to start the second half. "It was a coach's decision," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "His shot is off. There's no question about that." Anthony scored just seven points on 3-of-20 shooting for Denver (1-2), which shot just below 40 percent (31-of-78) for the third consecutive game. Anthony has made just 17-of-67 shots this season. "Our minds as a basketball team are not collectively right," Bzdelik said. "I'm the head coach and I'll take full responsibility for that." Earl Boykins scored 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting and Rodney White added 13 as the Nuggets' bench outscored the starters, 47-35. Denver, which was without power forward Nene for the second straight game due to a strained left hamstring.
