Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Michael Redd is showing signs he is out to improve his scoring average for the fourth consecutive season. Redd scored 30 points to lead five players in double figures as the Milwaukee Bucks won their home opener, 102-88 over the Cleveland Cavaliers. "I just wanted to be more aggressive, come out and get some open looks and knock them down," said Redd, who averaged 21.7 points last season, when he made his first All-Star team. Milwaukee (1-1), which has won six of seven home openers, lost to Orlando on Wednesday on a late basket by Steve Francis after Redd had given the Bucks a one-point lead with 3.5 seconds remaining. "We started to slip at the end of the first half and they came back," Redd said "But we buckled down in the second half to make sure nothing like that happened again." Keith Van Horn, who finished with 22 points and 14 rebounds, hit a pair of 3-pointers during a 14-0 run that gave the Bucks an 82-70 advantage early in the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers went scoreless for 5 1/2 minutes. "I think we started moving the ball offensively (in the second half)," Van Horn said. "We stopped forcing things, which had led to turnovers and got them going." Maurice Williams had 10 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds in his second career start and Desmond Mason came off the bench to score 11 points for Milwaukee. "(Maurice) has been great running the team and getting us out running," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. LeBron James scored a season-high 31 points and sparked a 10-0 run that closed the first half and gave the Cavaliers a 51-47 lead. "It seemed like our energy level went down (in the third quarter) and they started making shots," James said. "We started missing them and that frustrated us." Jeff McInnis scored 16 points and Drew Gooden added 12 for the Cavaliers, who missed 16 free throws and were outrebounded, 51-37. "That team should not outrebound us by that much," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "My big people did not come to play tonight." Cleveland (0-3) dropped its first five games last season en route to a 6-19 start.
