Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Rodney Buford was held scoreless for the first three quarters but made the shots when they counted most. In one of the lowest-scoring games of the shot clock era, Buford hit a pair of 3-pointers during a 14-4 fourth-quarter run as the New Jersey Nets posted a 64-60 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. With the Trail Blazers leading, 52-47, with 9:12 remaining, Buford hit a 3-pointer and teammate Brian Scalabrine added a reverse layup just under three minutes later. Portland regained the lead on a basket by Zach Randolph, but Buford answered with his second 3-pointer with 4:20 remaining, giving New Jersey the lead for good with 4:20 to go. "That's what I do," Buford said. "I'm a shooter, I'm a scorer. Any time I hit that first shot, it's lights out." Richard Jefferson, who managed only three points in the first three quarters, added another 3-pointer 33 seconds later. "I didn't want to be too aggressive and take bad shots and put our team in a bad position," said Jefferson, who scored eight points on 3-of-11 shooting. "That was the first halfway-decent look I had all game." Alonzo Mourning capped the rally with a pair of baskets, driving past Theo Ratliff for a baseline dunk and a 62-56 edge with 83 seconds left. Randolph scored the next four points before Jacque Vaughn hit a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining to seal the win. The teams combined for an NBA record-low 44 baskets - one less than the previous low established by Charlotte and Miami on December 20, 2000. They also posted only 124 points, just five more than the NBA record since the advent of the shot clock in 1954. "There are nights like this," Buford said. "You can say it's your defense or they just missed shots. I'm going to say it's our D." Buford took advantage of the extended playing time he was given due to the absence of guards Ron Mercer and Travis Best, who were sidelined with injuries. The Nets also lost center Jason Collins to a sprained ankle in the first half. Despite shooting just 34 percent (25-of-73) from the floor, New Jersey shored up its shaky defense, which had been allowing 106 points per game. The Nets held the Trail Blazers to 24 percent (19-of-78) shooting. "We thought our effort level was tremendous, being shorthanded and losing (Collins) in the first half," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "Our effort level was phenomenal and then we hit some timely shots." "These are the games you win on defense and guts and they gutted it out," Portland forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim said. Mourning had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Zoran Planinic added 12 and eight for New Jersey, which dominated inside, holding a 54-41 edge on the boards and 30-12 in points in the paint. "We're gonna have nights like this where (the shots) aren't going to fall for us," Mourning said. "What we have to do is make a concerted effort to play defense. We have the heart and the ability to outwork teams." Randolph scored 16 points, including Portland's final eight, and Abdur-Rahim added 13 on just 5-of-16 shooting. Darius Miles and Damon Stoudamire each made only 2-of-12 shots and scored seven points. "This seriously hurt," Miles said. "The team we have, we should beat every team in the East. Hopefully, we can bounce back." Ratliff was limited to just 28 minutes due to foul trouble but managed five blocks and is leading the league with 23. Portland made only five of its first 33 shots, including a 4-for-25 effort in the first quarter. Miles was 1-for-10 in the opening period and Abdur-Rahim missed all six shots. "We got a lot of open looks," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "But we just couldn't knock shots down." The Nets had a 32-30 halftime lead but were trailing by one heading into the final period despite holding the Blazers to 3-of-19 shooting in the third quarter.
