Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New York Knicks turned things around with the help of some turnovers by the Philadelphia 76ers. Nazr Mohammed scored 18 points as part of a balanced attack as the Knicks took full advantage of 28 turnovers by the 76ers en route to a 96-88 victory. The Knicks (1-2) were coming off Saturday's 107-73 loss to Boston, their worst ever in a home opener. On Monday, assistant Dick Helm - a long-time ally of coach Lenny Wilkens - was let go, sending a message of urgency to the coaching staff. Among the players who needed to turn things around was Mohammed, who scored just nine points in the first two games. Facing one of his former clubs, he bounced back by making 7-of-10 shots and grabbing eight rebounds. "That was not us," Mohammed said. "We practice hard against each other and we knew we didn't bring that same intensity to the floor (on Saturday). We knew what we had to do." "Nazr played more like the Nazr that we want," Wilkens said. "I don't want him to feel like he has to score out there to be effective. I want him to think about rebounding and defending." The Knicks also picked up their defense, which had been passive in the first two games. They harassed Allen Iverson into nine turnovers, including seven in the first half, when they took control for good. "I take responsibility for not getting my teammates the ball and the turnovers," said Iverson, who has 20 turnovers in five games. "I need to stop turning the ball over. It's nothing with my teammates; it's just me." "We wanted to make it hard for them," Knicks guard Jamal Crawford said. "We wanted to pick it up full-court and deny them. Nazr picked up the defensive intensity and had a great game." Crawford scored 22 points and Stephon Marbury added 13 and 12 assists for the Knicks as the backcourt mates played much better than they did against Boston. New York shot 48 percent (37-of-77). "We know we played bad Saturday," said forward Mike Sweetney, who had nine points on 4-of-4 shooting. "We knew we could play better." Iverson had 29 points and 10 assists but again did not get much help from his teammates as Philadelphia (1-3) dropped its third straight game. The 76ers, who have lost six of their last seven meetings with the Knicks, got into immediate trouble in the first quarter, falling behind, 27-18. New York extended the advantage to 17 points late in the second quarter. "We came out with the energy we're supposed to come out with and that begins with your defense," Wilkens said. "For the third straight game, we found ourselves down by double digits in a hole," Sixers coach Jim O'Brien said. "Every time we tried climbing back, turnovers was a major factor." Philadelphia used a 9-0 run to pull within eight points late in the third period but got no closer.
