Game StoryBOSTON (Ticker) -- Before delivering the game-winning shot, Pierce took a shot of his own. Pierce sank a fadeaway jumper as time expired to give the Boston Celtics a 90-88 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, who were dealt another tough road loss. Portland's Darius Miles, who scored 14 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, missed a finger roll with 40 seconds left. As players from both teams converged for the rebound, Portland's Ruben Patterson hit Pierce in his mouth with his left arm, sending Pierce to the floor for roughly a minute. "I got hit in the upper lip and the nose and it kind of shook me up a little bit," said Pierce, who had dental work Tuesday to repair a chipped tooth. "It blanked me out for a quick second. I was a little dizzy." During the ensuing timeout, Celtics coach Doc Rivers said he wasn't sure Pierce was going to be able to come back into the game. "Next thing I know he just jumped up and went in," Rivers said. "I told the (doctor) that I was a little dizzy but I gathered my nuts and bolts and went back in," said Pierce, who scored 20 points. Boston's Gary Payton had his drive blocked by Theo Ratliff, and Portland's Zach Randolph was fouled. He split the free throws for an 88-88 tie with 19 seconds to go. Not calling a timeout, Pierce waved off a pick-and-roll by Mark Blount and decided to go 1-on-1 with the defensive-minded Patterson. He backed him up with a jab step, stepped back to hit a 18-footer from the left wing as the horn sounded, then jumped on the scorer's table as the FleetCenter crowd went wild. "I took a little bit of a beating there at the end but I paid them back," Pierce said. "Another great player made another great shot to beat us," conceded Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks, whose team was beaten Sunday by a shot by Toronto's Vince Carter. "We had one of our better defenders, not our best defender (on Pierce). Three guys ran up to set a screen and he waved them off. What a shot." Portland lost at Boston for the first time since March 1, 1998 and fell to 0-3 on its road trip. The losses have come by a combined 10 points, all in late-game situations. Raef LaFrentz had 18 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double in 21 career games with the Celtics. After scoring only 60 points in a four-point loss at New Jersey the previous night, the Trail Blazers appeared sluggish from the start. In the first half, they shot just 37 percent from the floor and were outrebounded by 12 as they fell behind, 51-39. "When we started out the game it looked like we were running in mud," Cheeks said. "And at the half after a tongue-lashing, so to speak, we turned it on." Portland scored six of the final eight points in the third quarter and opened the fourth period on a 10-2 run, taking a 74-73 lead on Patterson's alley-oop layup from Damon Stoudamire. "In the second half, we brought energy and the Celtics let us get back into the game," Miles said. "It was frustrating to lose, but what I thought was good was the fight back part in this team. We opened a lot of eyes with what we did in the fourth quarter." With a 3-pointer that gave the Celtics an 80-79 lead with 5:01 remaining, Payton became the 29th player and fourth in a Boston uniform to reach 20,000 points. The 15-year veteran finished with 15 points and six assists. "It's a great accomplishment but it really hasn't set in yet," Payton said. "Now we move on. I worry about my team and getting wins more than my accomplishments. But it is great."
