Game StoryINDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers were looking for a first. The Los Angeles Clippers accomplished one. Elton Brand had 19 points and a season-high 16 rebounds as the Clippers rolled to a 102-68 victory over the shorthanded Pacers, who suffered the worst home loss in franchise history. The win was the first for Los Angeles in six tries at Conseco Fieldhouse and prevented the depleted and drained Pacers from starting 5-0 for the first time since joining the NBA in 1976. "This is a big win, a big win," said Brand. "A lot of our guys think that we should be 4-1 right now, but we're not. We had to put the last game behind us (a double-overtime loss to Detroit) and move on and I think we did that. Anytime you can come into Indiana and get a win like this, we'll take it." Indiana played without star forward Ron Artest, averaging over 24 points per game, for a second straight night because of what Indiana coach Rick Carlisle called "a situation that compromised the integrity of the team." The Pacers were also without starting center Scot Pollard, out with a sore back, and forward Jonathan Bender, who checked into the locker room feeling ill. They also were coming off a hard-fought 102-101 victory at Minnesota on Tuesday. In addition, Pacers All-Star forward Jermaine O'Neal left the game in the third period after aggravating a left foot injury. "We certainly didn't play well and didn't play with the kind of energy we needed to," Carlisle said. "You just take the hit. It was a bad hit, an embarrassing loss. Shorthanded or not, you never look for excuses or wait around for this situation." The Pacers jumped out to a 12-4 lead just over four minutes into the first period but managed just 15 points in the rest of the first half. In the second period, the Clippers outscored the Pacers, 31-7, limiting them to 2-of-16 shooting. Both the period and half totals were the lowest in Indiana franchise history. Its previous worst home loss was a 32-point setback to Portland on January 23, 1985. Bobby Simmons continued his surprisingly strong start with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting for the Clippers, who are 2-1 on the road after going 10-31 away from home last season. A defensive-minded journeyman, Simmons scored 30 points in the opener against Seattle and is averaging 16.6 points on 64 percent shooting. "Well, it was a great win for us, even though they were short-handed with Artest out and O'Neal down," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Our guys did a great job on defense. We've had three to four good defensive games. We have a great group of guys and each one comes out and does better than the last time." Stephen Jackson scored 15 points for Indiana, which had a 12-game home winning streak against the Clippers snapped. "It was one of those nights where nothing that we tried worked," said Jackson. "It wasn't so much of us being a bad team; they were a good team tonight. We just have to say, 'We lost by 34 points in the fifth game of the season ... so what?'"
