Game StoryNEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Antoine Walker has been the lone bright spot in a tough start for the Atlanta Hawks. On Friday, he carried them to their first win of the season. Walker scored 27 points, and the Hawks used a second-half surge for a 96-95 victory over the New Orleans Hornets, who remain winless. In Atlanta's 0-4 start, Walker led the team in scoring (21.8 points per game), rebounds (8.5) and assists (3.8). Against the Hornets, he had a season high and added eight rebounds and seven assists. Walker, who was acquired this offseason in a four-player trade with Dallas, made the 1,000th 3-pointer of his career - and his only one of the game - to give the Hawks the lead for good, 89-87, with 3:56 left. "I hadn't had open looks from (3-point range) all night," Walker said. "I just caught it in a rhythm and shot it." Walker's free throw with 17 seconds left gave Atlanta a 96-93 edge and proved to be the difference when New Orleans managed just two points on its final possession. Al Harrington and Kenny Anderson scored 17 points apiece for the Hawks and hooked up on a crucial play down the stretch. With Atlanta on top, 91-89, Anderson whipped a crosscourt pass under the hoop to Harrington, who dunked and was fouled, converting the free throw for a five-point advantage. Hornets guard Baron Davis argued the call and was whistled for a technical foul. Jon Barry made the free throw to push the lead to 95-89 with 1:13 remaining. Davis left the game at that point with back spasms and did not return. The All-Star guard has a strained lower back and will not travel to Milwaukee for New Orleans' game Saturday against the Bucks. Davis declined comment after the game and was visibly upset in the hallway outside the Hornets' locker room. "I don't even know what was going on," Walker said of the Davis technical. "But I was happy he did it." Anderson, in his 13th NBA season, had season-highs in points, rebounds (6), assists (5) and steals (5). "Kenny's been struggling all year," Atlanta coach Mike Woodson said. "Kenny came up to me the other day after practice and said, 'Coach, just hang in there with me. I know I'm slumping a little bit, but I'll figure it out.' Like a true veteran, he came to the surface tonight and did what was expected of him." In the Hawks' four losses, they were outshot 51 to 40 percent from the floor and outscored by an average of 20.3 points. Atlanta shot a season-best 50 percent against New Orleans, including 12-of-16 in the third quarter when they outscored the Hornets, 28-20. "We kept playing. (The Hornets) got an early lead, but that didn't bother us," Walker said. "We fought right back. We were up 12, they came back, but we didn't get frustrated. We've (gotten frustrated) over the first four games. We've just given up. Teams have dominated us. We finally stayed poised and focused." Davis was 4-of-6 from the arc and scored 18 points and Jamaal Magloire notched his second straight double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds for New Orleans (0-5), one of just three teams in the league without a victory. The Hornets are 0-4 at home for the first time in franchise history, including a pair of one-point losses. For the second straight game New Orleans was dominated in the middle quarters at home. The Los Angeles Lakers outscored them 63-34 in the second and third periods Tuesday, and the Hawks won those periods 58-45 - a 121-79 two-game total. "We are not playing good defense, and we are not playing smart," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "Those two combinations are going to lose you a lot of games."
