Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki didn't need to duplicate his previous effort with Jerry Stackhouse around. Nowitzki scored 31 points and Stackhouse added a season-high 28 as the Dallas Mavericks extended their winning streak over the New Jersey Nets to nine games with a 94-78 victory. Nowitzki, who scored 41 points in a 20-point rout at Miami on Thursday, had 11 in the fourth quarter to help the Mavericks maintain the cushion provided by Stackhouse. Formerly one of the league's most lethal scorers, Stackhouse comes off the bench for one of the deepest teams in the NBA. He showed he still has explosiveness, converting all five of his shots in the third quarter. "It was fun," Stackhouse said. "We weren't doing anything different, I was just able to get some opportunities and it's always good to see the ball go in the hole." "Stackhouse came off the bench and was a dominant player," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "Not only did he score, but he moved the ball. Everybody else just gutted out a good defensive performance." Stackhouse, who buried tough jumpers over defenders and took the ball to the basket, scored eight points during a crucial 13-2 run midway through the third period, capping it with a 19-footer for a 66-55 advantage with 4:18 left. "I've been comfortable the whole time," Stackhouse said of his new role. "But we have guys that can (score), so you don't have to do it every night." Stackhouse had four times as many points as the bench of the injury-plagued Nets, which shot just 1-of-8. shooting. "We have one of the deepest benches in the league," Nowitzki said. "Stackhouse has been great and I'm sure he's going to win a lot of games for us." The Nets' frustration with Stackhouse came to a head with 2:23 left in the third period, when he was thrown to the floor by center Alonzo Mourning after the pair got tangled under the Dallas basket. The incident resulted in a technical foul for Mourning and more points for Stackhouse, who sank the ensuing free throw. New Jersey climbed within eight points early in the fourth quarter before Nowitzki took over, scoring nine points in a span of 4 1/2 minutes. His turnaround jumper with 4:15 to go gave Dallas a 90-76 cushion. "(The Nets) did a good job of hanging around so we had to make sure in the fourth quarter we kept (the lead) over 10 points," Nowitzki said. "If not, it could have been a different game." Marquis Daniels added 11 points and Eric Dampier 10 for the Mavericks, who have not lost to the Nets since March 2, 2000. Nowitzki and Stackhouse each made 10-of-18 shots while the rest of the team shot just 15-for-42. But Dallas, which has had a reputation as a soft team in recent years, continued its stellar defense. It has held its first seven opponents under 100 points for the first time in team history. "We worked really hard on our defense and we have acquired some defensive players," Nelson said. "The other guys have worked pretty hard to perfect their defense. I'm pretty proud of the defense so far this year." "(The Mavericks) played extremely together," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "We just couldn't get enough good offensive possessions. They are obviously a much improved defensive team." Richard Jefferson had 28 points and 10 rebounds and Zoran Planinic posted career highs of 16 and nine for the Nets, who shot only 35 percent (24-of-69) and committed 21 turnovers.
