Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) - Shortly after winning the NBA title last season, the Detroit Pistons let Mehmet Okur go. On Friday, Okur got them back. Okur scored 19 points off the bench and Carlos Boozer recorded his third double-double this season to lead the Utah Jazz to a 108-93 victory over the depleted Pistons. In July, Detroit refused to match the Jazz's six-year, $50 million offer sheet to Okur, cutting ties with the 6-11 forward who averaged nearly 10 points and six rebounds a game last season. The Turkish native wasted little time reminding the Pistons what they once had, sinking all eight of his free throws and grabbing seven rebounds. "I had a little extra tonight. I felt really good out there," Okur said. "It doesn't really matter to me who I play against, I just want to play Jazz basketball, play all together, play hard, have fun, nothing special." Okur scored 11 points in the first half, which he finished with a big assist. After Detroit's Tayshaun Prince hit two free throws with three seconds left, Okur threw the inbounds pass the length of the floor, perfectly leading Boozer for a layup at the buzzer and a 62-42 advantage. "I think (Mehmet) needed to prove that Detroit made a mistake to lose him, and I think he did a great job," Utah forward Andrei Kirilenko said. "Mehmet is a good player and right now he's getting better and better from game to game. He can do everything on the floor." Okur and the rest of the bench spearheaded a huge second quarter, when Utah outscored Detroit, 34-19. Utah's reserves scored 25 points in the quarter, including nine from Howard Eisley and seven from Raja Bell. Kirilenko had four of his 17 during a 10-0 run that put the Jazz up 47-31 midway through the second. Through three quarters, Utah shot an astounding 69 percent from the field but cooled off in the final period. Detroit took advantage with a 17-5 surge to start the quarter, cutting the Jazz's lead to 95-86 on Lindsey Hunter's 20-footer with 6:36 left. But Eisley answered with a jumper and Okur followed with a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 13 points. Boozer, who had 20 points and 13 rebounds, added a three-point play with 3:06 remaining to give the Jazz a 104-88 advantage. "They outhustled us tonight and made some big hustle plays that I thought were the key to the game," Pistons assistant Gar Heard said. "You can't be down 20 and fight your way back, because everything has to be perfect in order for you to catch up." With All-Star center Ben Wallace attending to family matters after the death of his brother Tuesday and guard Chauncey Billups out with a strained left ankle, Detroit didn't have enough to overcome the suddenly explosive Utah offense. The Jazz passed the 100-point mark for the fifth time in six games this year and shot just under 59 percent. "All the easy baskets on their part, all the times we didn't do right on pick-and-rolls, all of that, Ben Wallace makes all that easier for us," said Prince, who had 16 points and six rebounds. "That just lets you know how much we need him." "We caught them at a good time, from our standpoint, because they had two great players out, and that makes it kind of difficult for them," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. Antonio McDyess filled in nicely for Wallace with 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Hunter added 14 in place of Billups. Richard Hamilton scored 21 points as Detroit fell to 1-3 on the road. The Pistons were 23-18 away from home last season.
