Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- When the Houston Rockets faltered down the stretch, the Atlanta Hawks took full advantage. Rookie Royal Ivey scored five of his seven fourth-quarter points during a big run as the Hawks rallied for an 88-84 victory over the Rockets. After cruising through three quarters, Houston fell apart in the final period, making just 7-of-22 shots, including a stretch of nine straight misses. The Hawks seized the opportunity, going on a 15-0 run that included a layup by Ivey with two minutes to go that gave Atlanta its first lead at 83-82. "We played defense," Hawks forward Antoine Walker said. "We played together. We shared the basketball and we just played the right way." "We just melted down," said Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy, whose team held an 82-71 lead with just over six minutes left. "I have not done a good job teaching them to play with the lead. We just came out there and wasted a lot of possessions when we had leads." Yao Ming, who had 27 points and 11 rebounds, ended Houston's drought with a jumper with 18 seconds remaining, drawing the Rockets within 86-84. But Jon Barry made a pair of free throws two seconds later and the Hawks held on for their first home win in three attempts. "We wanted to win," Walker said. "We're trying to get back in the thick of things. That's been our Achilles heel all year." "We (were ahead by) 11 points with six minutes left in the game," Yao said. "We just let the Hawks work harder than us." Walker recorded his second straight double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Peja Drobnjak scored 15 points off the bench for Atlanta (2-5). Tracy McGrady scored 21 points for the Rockets (4-5), who led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter. One night after Van Gundy questioned whether Yao and McGrady could co-exist, the duo combined for 46 points through three quarters, including 19 of Houston's 24 points in the third period. But the pair was held scoreless in the fourth quarter until Yao's basket in the closing seconds. "Ball pressure, just pressure made everything tough for us," McGrady said. "I give those guys a lot of credit, it seems like they had more energy than us. We let our guard down and they stepped it up a notch." "We just fronted (Yao) and they were a little reluctant to throw over the top to him," said Atlanta forward Al Harrington, who scored 14 points. "We played the right way. We need to find a way to play like that all the time. We'd win a lot of games." After Jim Jackson's layup with 6:11 to go gave the Rockets an 11-point lead, Harrington ignited the Hawks' comeback with a short jumper and a layup around Drobnjak's jump shot. A layup by Walker and a pair of free throws by Ivey closed the gap to 82-81 before the second-round pick out of Texas put Atlanta ahead with a layup. Rookie reserve swingman Josh Childress scored 12 points for the Hawks, who held a 28-10 edge in bench points. "Josh and Royal have to share the player of the game award today," Harrington said. "They both played big." Atlanta improved to 45-19 all-time at home against Houston.
