Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Amare Stoudemire continued his development into an NBA star at the expense of the lowly New Orleans Hornets. Stoudemire matched a career high with 38 points as the Phoenix Suns posted a 95-84 triumph over the winless Hornets. After averaging 23.9 points per game over the final 32 contests of 2003-04, Stoudemire had improved this season with an average of 26.1 points through seven games, including a season-high 34 in Tuesday's victory over Dallas. The 2003 Rookie of the Year was even better in this one, scoring 11 points in the first half before adding 15 in the third quarter and 12 in the final period for the seventh 30-point effort of his career. Stoudemire also scored 38 points on December 30, 2002 at Minnesota. "I just tried to get good position on offense," said Stoudemire, who shot 14-of-22 from the field and 10-of-18 from the line. "They did come with the double-team, but it was a little too late. ... I just go out and play hard. I had a pretty decent game, except I missed a lot of free throws." Stoudemire has scored at least 20 points in 34 of his last 38 games, including a league-best 12 in a row. Shawn Marion scored 23 points and gathered nine rebounds and Steve Nash added 16 points for the Suns (6-2), who recorded their second straight win over the Hornets after five consecutive losses. "Amare was huge tonight," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "The rest of the guys scored on some crucial baskets. Shawn hit some big threes, everybody did a nice job. It was like a workmanship job and we will go on to the next one." "We have so many weapons out there, you don't know who's going to be the one to get it going," Marion said. "Steve Nash on the point is important. He's a vet, he knows how to play the game. He can get everybody the ball where they can score." Phoenix's top offseason acquisition, Nash followed Tuesday's league season-high 18 assists with 12 in this one. New Orleans tied an NBA record by attempting just two free throws. The mark was set by Cleveland on November 26, 1994 against Golden State. "Maybe we're not taking the ball to the basket," said Wesley, who made both attempts. "It says that we're not getting to the penalty or running over somebody. I just don't know." The Hornets have attempted five free throws in their last two games. "I think five free-throw attempts for us in the last two games is unheard of," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "It just bothers me that tonight we get to the free-throw line just twice and (the Suns) get there 20-something times. That's the game." David Wesley scored 19 points for New Orleans (0-7), which placed leading scorer Baron Davis on the injured list with an inflamed disk in his lower back earlier Wednesday. "Baron provides a lot of those free throws for us because he gets to the basket," Scott said. "He draws a lot of attention. We have to find it from other places." "It is really frustrating (being winless)," Wesley said. "We have to figure this out in a hurry. ... This is crazy, real crazy." With New Orleans holding a 24-18 lead early in the second quarter, Phoenix went on a 15-2 run that was capped by a pair of jumpers by Nash. The Hornets tied the game at 35-35 with 2:04 to go in the period on a layup by Wesley, but Marion hit consecutive jumpers to restore the lead, which swelled to 14 points late in the fourth quarter. "They outplayed us and outworked us and hustled to all of the loose balls," said Hornets guard Darrell Armstrong, who scored 11 points and added eight assists. "We just did not do it tonight and I think that they wanted it a little more than us."
