Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Carmelo Anthony has been carrying the Denver Nuggets for three games. Against the Toronto Raptors, he finally got some help from Kenyon Martin. Anthony scored 30 points and Martin had season highs of 24 and 16 rebounds to lead the Nuggets to a hard-fought 112-106 victory over the struggling Toronto Raptors. "People have been looking for that since the start of the season," Anthony said. "Hopefully, we can carry it on to the next game." After two free throws by Earl Boykins gave Denver a 104-102 lead with 2:19 to play, Anthony blocked a point-blank hook shot from Jerome Moiso out to Rafer Alston, who missed a 3-pointer. "That wasn't the biggest block (of my career)," Anthony said. "It definitely was the most important one though, especially at that point of the game." Boykins made another basket with just over a minute left before Jalen Rose and Andre Miller traded jumpers to make it 108-104. Two free throws by Rose cut the deficit to two before Martin - who reached the 20-point plateau for the first time this season - sealed the victory with an emphatic alley-oop slam from Miller with 13 seconds to play. "This was just a great team effort," Martin said. "Everybody that played tonight contributed." There were six lead changes in the fourth quarter and no team led by more than four points in the period until Anthony's two free throws with five seconds left. "Obviously, we needed this win badly tonight," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "It was a gut-check win." Anthony, who has averaged 28 points in the last four games, made all 16 of his free throws as Denver went 30-of-34 from the line. Martin had a double-double at the half with 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Nuggets, who will play their next four in a row and eight of their next nine at home. Toronto was outscored 56-26 in the paint and has lost four straight since a 4-1 start. "Our game plan was to try and take Martin and Anthony out of the game," Raptors coach Sam Mitchell said. "We didn't get to them in time." Rose scored 13 of his 30 points in the first half to help the Raptors take a 61-56 lead. "I think people underestimate how young our team really is," said Rose, who was 15-of-16 from the line. "Being a young team, we need to learn how to win together." Toronto lost five of six on its West Coast road trip. "I thought we had a more consistent effort," Mitchell said. "We did enough things to win the game but we didn't get enough stops."
