Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Not even their 
lowest-scoring game of the season could prevent the Seattle
SuperSonics from winning again.

Rashard Lewis scored 17 points as the surprising SuperSonics
defeated the hapless New Jersey Nets, 79-68, for their eighth
straight victory.

Seattle was held 24 points below its season average but still
was in control down the stretch against New Jersey, the NBA's
lowest-scoring team. The Nets came in averaging only 82.7 points
per game and are even worse at home, averaging a meager 72.7
points in six contests.

"We knew this would be a gut-check for us," Seattle coach Nate
McMillan said. "We came out to the East Coast and beat a very
good team in Philadelphia (on Tuesday) and coming in here
back-to-back against New Jersey, with no Jason Kidd, had letdown
written all over it."

Battling fatigue in their second game in as many nights, the
Sonics endured travel problems getting to New Jersey. It showed
as they struggled to a 13-11 lead after the first quarter and
managed a 36-29 halftime edge in a sluggish affair.

"Today we were tired," Lewis said. "We had to catch the bus up
here because something was wrong with the plane. We were a step
slow but we are playing better as a team."

Ray Allen looked tired for the Sonics, managing just 14 points
on 5-of-15 shooting after scoring 37 in Tuesday's 103-95 win
over the Sixers.

"They took us out of everything we wanted to do," Allen said.
"They took away my shot and they were always in my face. They
got in Rashard's face. It was a relief that we barely got by."

Richard Jefferson scored 20 points and Travis Best added all 13
of his points in the fourth quarter to keep the Nets in the
game. But New Jersey could not take advantage of Seattle's
struggles.

It was the fourth straight loss for the Nets, who dropped to 1-5
at home.

"We're playing solid defense, but we beat ourselves," Jefferson
said. "I think maybe our defense is so good because our offense
is pretty unreliable."

"The encouraging thing is that our guys are defending, even
though we are in huge offensive slumps," New Jersey coach
Lawrence Frank said.

After the Nets took their last lead, 44-43, on Jefferson's
jumper with 3:12 left in the third quarter, the Sonics ended the
period with a 10-2 spurt.

Jefferson hit two free throws to pull the Nets within 64-60 with
3:13 remaining before Lewis answered with a 3-pointer.  Seattle
increased its lead to 73-63 on Vladimir Radmanovic's driving
layup with 1:15 to go.

"We can say we're capable of stopping a capable team," said New
Jersey forward Eric Williams, who scored just three points.
"This team has been averaging 103 points and we held them under
80.  On the other hand, you normally win those games when you
hold the other team under 80 points.  We just have to find a way
to put some points on the board."

Danny Fortson and Radmanovic also scored 14 points apiece for
the Sonics, who have not lost since a 114-84 season-opening
defeat to the Los Angeles Clippers.
