Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Bonzi Wells enjoyed success in his five-plus seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers. Since being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies last December, he has saved his best for his former team. Wells led a balanced attack with a season-high 25 points as the Grizzlies rolled to a 101-82 rout of the Trail Blazers. Wells averaged 13.3 points in 310 games with Portland before being dealt to Memphis last season. He has scored 26.5 points per game in two return visits since, leading the Grizzlies to wins on both occasions. "I don't go out there and try to do anything personal, I just try to execute (coach Hubie Brown's) game plan," Wells said. A product of Ball State, Wells made 11-of-18 shots. He scored 11 points in the second quarter, when the Grizzlies raced to a 53-40 halftime lead. "This was one of my best games as far as effort and points," Wells said. "Hats off to my teammates for continuing to give me the ball." Memphis shot 54 percent (39-of-72) from the floor against the league's stingiest defense. It opened its largest lead at 97-63 on a free throw by Dahntay Jones with 5:24 remaining. "That was as bad as any game I've been involved in since I've been here," Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "It's one of the few times in my memory we didn't play hard." Portland had held its first six opponents to a league-low 42 percent shooting. "They made 15 layups in the first half alone," Cheeks said. "We just had a total collapse of the part of our team that's been effective, the defensive end." Since an 0-4 start, the Grizzlies have taken off. They have won three of their last four games by an average of 23.7 points. In their one loss during that stretch, a 118-113 setback at Seattle on Sunday, they led by 21 points in the third quarter before tiring down the stretch. "Walking out of Seattle was one of the toughest losses since I've been here," Brown said. "It's important to focus on the good things and carry them over into the next game. That's what our guys did, and I'm proud of them for that." "I told the guys that we weren't gonna have an instant replay from the other night," Wells said. "When we got up 20, I said, 'Let's make it 30,' and we did." Pau Gasol scored 15 points on 5-of-5 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds for his second double-double in three games. "It was good for us to get back on track quickly," Gasol said. "I'm glad to see Bonzi play well tonight after some of the boos he received early." Zach Randolph scored 16 points for the Blazers, who were outrebounded, 37-27, and outscored in the paint, 54-34. Portland has lost four of five and has failed to reach 90 points in three of those defeats. "Nobody had energy tonight, including myself," said Randolph, who was just 5-of-17 from the field. "The Griz came hard tonight, they played the whole game."
