Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs at long last came out of the Wachovia Center with a win. Duncan scored 34 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Spurs beat the Philadelphia 76ers here for the first time in five years, 88-80. Manu Ginobili chipped in 17 points and nine assists and Rasho Nesterovic 16 and 11 rebounds for the Spurs, who had not won in Philadelphia since a 94-91 triumph on November 22, 1999. The four-game road losing streak against the 76ers was their longest against any NBA team away from San Antonio. The Sixers missed the first 16 shots of the game as the Spurs opened up the early 11-0 advantage. Backup forward Kyle Korver scored Philadelphia's first points on a jumper 7 1/2 minutes into the game. "You could feel the crowd getting real tense, and getting a little upset," said Korver, who scored 17 points. "We couldn't buy a basket that first quarter. We weren't taking tough shots by any means. We were missing layups and missing open shots. For some reason they didn't want to drop." The Sixers scored a Wachovia Center-low six points in the opening quarter - making only 3-of-25 shots - to fall behind by 14 points but chipped away, climbing within 40-33 at the half before taking a 59-55 edge after three quarters. "It's a coach's worst nightmare, jumping off to an early lead in the NBA," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "You just sit there and wait for the score to get even again. It comes down to the fourth quarter, to who makes shots and who doesn't turn it over." But after Philadelphia forward Corliss Williamson opened the fourth quarter with a jump hook, the Spurs countered with a 12-1 run, taking the lead for good, 64-62, on a bank shot by Duncan with 8:57 left. "We did a great job of moving the ball," Duncan said. "Our guys are able to shoot shots and understand the offense. That's when we are at our best." The Sixers got within 67-65 on a 3-pointer by rookie Andre Iguodala with 7:37 remaining, but Brent Barry hit back-to-back jumpers and San Antonio led by at least four points thereafter. "They are a potential world champion," Sixers coach Jim O'Brien said of the Spurs. "Against a team that has Duncan in the low post, you can't cover every event and you have to give them something." "The scary thing is we haven't put together a (total) game yet," Barry said. "We've had good individual performances. A number of people stepped up and took care of the ball." Allen Iverson scored 24 points but made only 8-of-24 shots for the Sixers, who connected on just 35 percent (29-of-82) of their attempts. Iverson was forced to leave the game with 30 seconds remaining after diving after a loose ball and bumping a courtside broadcast camera. An X-ray revealed Iverson suffered only a bruised right elbow. He was not available for comment.
