Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- One night after a draining overtime contest, the Utah Jazz needed a lift from their bench. Mehmet Okur answered the call. Okur scored 18 points off the bench and and starter Carlos Boozer had 20 and 11 rebounds as Utah posted a 92-79 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. The Jazz looked sluggish less than 24 hours after a 107-105 loss to the Heat on Friday and trailed the Hawks, 35-27, midway through the second quarter. But Okur, who did not play in the first quarter, scored eight points and had an assist in a 10-2 run that drew the Jazz even, 37-37, with 3:46 remaining in the half. Okur added a 3-pointer with two minutes left in the quarter as Utah led 49-46 at the break. Jazz coach Jerry Sloan had wanted Okur, who was 5-of-8 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw line, to be more aggressive on the offensive end. "Mehmet had a good game tonight," Sloan said. "I was glad to see him be as active as he was from the center position. He shot the ball well tonight and that was the difference. We've been trying to get him to shoot it when he's open rather than taking three or four dribbles and allowing the defense to get up on him." A member of the 2004 Turkish Olympic team, Okur was cheered by about 400 of his countrymen in the upper deck. "I appreciate the support tonight from the fans from my country," said Okur, who also recorded eight rebounds and four assists. "It was good to see. They are everywhere. They love me." Jason Collier hit two jumpers early in the third quarter to give the Hawks a 50-49 lead, but Gordon Giricek scored seven of his 11 points in an 11-2 run that gave the Jazz the lead for good. "In the second half, we were playing catch up and that hurt us," said Hawks forward Antoine Walker, who scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. "We couldn't make enough shots to win the game." The Jazz took a 69-63 lead into the final quarter and extended the lead to 77-64 with an 8-1 run to start the period. The Hawks, who had rallied from an 11-point fourth quarter deficit on Tuesday to defeat the Houston Rockets, cut the lead to 84-79 on a 3-pointer by Jon Barry with 2:25 remaining. After a pair of free throws by Andrei Kirilenko 13 seconds later, Walker missed two from the line and Boozer, who scored 10 in the fourth, made two on the other end to give Utah a comfortable 88-79 advantage with 1:28 to play. "I missed those free throws," said Walker, who was 4-of-9 from the stripe. "That burst our bubble with two minutes to go." Atlanta was just 10-of-22 from the line. "We have to make (our free throws)," Hawks forward Al Harrington said. "Maybe we all need to stay after and shoot some more, but that kind of stuff will work itself out." Harrington had 17 points and 12 rebounds and rookie Josh Childress scored a season-high 16 points for the Hawks, who have lost three of four. Kirilenko had a solid all-around game with 11 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and seven blocks for Utah, which finished its four-game road trip at 2-2.
