Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Denver Nuggets are showing an awful lot of resolve at the Pepsi Center. Greg Buckner scored a career-high 28 points and Carmelo Anthony added 21 as the Nuggets shook off a sluggish start to rout the Dallas Mavericks, 110-82. Buckner was 10-of-13 from the field and Anthony made 9-of-14 shots as the Nuggets battled back from an early 28-13 deficit. Sharp shooting paved the way for Denver, which shot 55 percent (22-of-40) in the second half. "Put it on the team," said Buckner. "It's about the Nuggets tonight and not about Greg. I think I just shot a lot of layups and you are supposed to make those as a professional." The win was the fourth straight at home for Denver, which is 5-2 at the Pepsi Center this season and 0-3 on the road. "We played with great passion and effort for three quarters," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "We just need to play like that from wire to wire. Great teams win on the defensive end, that is what we did tonight." Kenyon Martin also had a big game for the Nuggets with 19 points and 10 rebounds, his third straight double-double and fourth this season. "Buckner gave us energy tonight," said Martin. "We need to take care of our home court first. This game was huge." Rookie Devin Harris scored 15 points for Dallas, which endured a brutal shooting performance, making just 38 percent (32-of-85). "Shots weren't falling tonight," said Harris. "We couldn't sustain the energy we started with, so it's on to the next one." The Mavericks were without All-Star Dirk Nowitzki, who missed the second half with a left ankle injury. "Everybody has to pick it up now that Dirk is hurt," said Mavericks reserve Jerry Stackhouse. "Obviously Dirk was a big part of our offense, but we don't need to reinvent the wheel. We had nearly a 20-point lead and lost our composure." Denver was leading 13-10 just over six minutes into the contest but two free throws by Erick Dampier with 5:22 left in the quarter sparked an 18-0 burst. Stackhouse had six points in the run, which Harris capped with a layup with 62 seconds left in the period. The Mavericks pushed their lead to 17 early in the second quarter but Earl Boykins buried a 19-footer that ignited a huge period for the Nuggets. Denver scored 37 of the final 51 points in the period with Buckner scoring 14 and Anthony 10 in the spurt. "We went into pieces in the second period and couldn't come out of it," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "We looked like a terrible team tonight." Denver led 55-49 at the break and Dallas never got closer than four points in the second half. The Mavericks trailed by as many as 30 after the break and fell to 4-2 on the road this season. The Nuggets are 17-2 over the last two seasons when scoring at least 110 points. They are 3-0 this season is such contests - with all three games coming at home.
