Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Quentin Richardson returned to the Staples Center and showed his former teammates how good life is with the Phoenix Suns. Richardson was part of a 30-point spurt over five-plus minutes of the second quarter that powered the Suns to their fourth consecutive victory, 122-111 over the Los Angeles Clippers. Amare Stoudemire registered his fourth straight 30-point game with 33 for the Suns, whose scary scoring again was on display. In posting a season high in points, Phoenix shot 54 percent (44-of-82) overall and 11-of-19 from the arc, scored 26 fast-break points and had four players with at least 22 points. Richardson spent his first four seasons with the Clippers before becoming a restricted free agent last summer. He was signed by the Suns to a six-year, $45 million offer sheet that the Clippers chose not to match. "I'm always happy when I come back here," he said. "I never worry about getting booed or anything like that. The important thing is we got the W, so there's a big smile on my face because of that." This season, Richardson has struggled, scoring nearly seven points per game less than he did last season. He made only 3-of-11 shots and scored 11 points before fouling out but made his presence felt in the second quarter, when Phoenix scored 39 points. "It's going to take him a little while, he's pressing a litttle bit," uns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "I hope he's enjoying it, because we're winning and he's a big part of it. We'll work him in, he'll work himself in. And we'll be fine." Joe Johnson scored a season-high 23 points, Shawn Marion had 22 and 14 rebounds and Steve Nash 22 and 18 assists for Phoenix (8-2), which is off to its best start since 1980. In the second quarter, the Suns used an 18-0 run highlighted by two 3-pointers by Richardson that turned a 33-24 deficit into a 42-33 lead in barely two minutes. A layup by Chris Wilcox ended the run of consecutive points. But Joe Johnson and Steve Nash sank 3-pointers in an ensuing 12-2 burst that widened the lead to 54-37 with 3:31 left. The overall spurt was 30-4 in just over five minutes, and the Clippers never recovered. "That's the way we play," Marion said. "We can score with the best of them, it's just a mtter of us stopping teams." Trailing by as many as 20 points, the Clippers utilized a lineup of starter Bobby Simmons and reserves Mikki Moore, rookie Shaun Livingston and Quintin Ross to pull within 107-101 with 5:18 left. But Richardson sank a jumper and, after Moore missed two free throws, Nash nailed a 12-footer to rebuild the lead to 111-101 with 4:35 to go. "I just made the open shot," Richardson said. "That's what Steve Nash does. How many assists did he have, 20? That's ridiculous. Who do you know that gets 18 assists? He had like 16 last game." Marko Jaric had 19 points and 10 assists for the Clippers, who have lost three in a row. Moore scored 18 points and Simmons and Elton Brand added 17 apiece. "I think they're the best team we've faced so far," Jaric said. "They're so unselfish, they run the floor so well. You don't now whose going to score 30 points. Look how many guys scored 20."
