Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Bonzi Wells has the Memphis Grizzlies on a roll. Wells scored a season-high 26 points, including a clutch 3-pointer in the final minute, to lift the Grizzlies to a 93-90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. The meeting was the first between the teams since San Antonio swept Memphis in a first-round playoff matchup last season. Wells has been a big factor in Memphis' turnaround from an 0-4 start. He has scored in double figures in each of the last six games and has shot 57 percent (30-of-53), including 7-of-9 from 3-point range, in the last four. In this one, Wells was 10-of-17. His 3-pointer with 47 seconds left snapped an 87-87 tie and gave the Grizzlies a lead they did not surrender. "This win was big for our organization, our team and our community," Wells said. "This was the team that put us out of the playoffs last year. We came into the game shorthanded, so we all knew that we had to step up to another level." Memphis was without forward Pau Gasol, who sat out his second straight game with an injured right ankle. Gasol averaged 18.5 points in the playoff series vs. the Spurs. Brian Cardinal filled in nicely for coach Hubie Brown, whose club has won five of seven since the rough start. Cardinal scored 13 points off the bench and Lorenzen Wright recorded his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Wright scored the Grizzlies' last three points to secure the lead. "(Brian) Cardinal had to step up," Brown said. "He's starting to get healthy and you can start to see what he can do. Lorenzen (Wright) also had a big night rebounding." Tim Duncan scored 26 points and gave San Antonio a chance with a free throw and a dunk in the final 43 seconds. Tony Parker scored 18, but just two in the second half, and Brent Barry chipped in 12. The Spurs inbounded the ball with 0.3 seconds left, but Barry was unable to get his 3-point attempt off in time. "I thought the Grizzlies did a great job pressuring us and getting out in the passing lanes," said San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich, who saw his team turn the ball over 20 times. "Our defense was outstanding tonight," Brown said. "We not only got to deflections but we started to hold them to one shot when we made our run in the third quarter." Aside from a two-point loss at Sacramento, Memphis has only one glaring blemish during their seven-game surge, a 118-113 loss to Seattle on November 14 in which they blew a 21-point lead. The Grizzlies will seek revenge Wednesday when the Sonics pay a visit. "We have Seattle next and we owe them too," Wells said. "We played well up there for 3 1/2 quarters and they snuck up on us at the end. Hopefully we can return the favor and get a big victory on Wednesday."
