Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Nazr Mohammed added to the Atlanta Hawks' woes at Madison Square Garden. Mohammed scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help the New York Knicks defeat the Hawks, 104-88. Acquired from the Hawks in a three-team trade in February, Mohammed had one of his best games as a Knick and did most of his damage in the first three quarters as New York ran its home winning streak against Atlanta to 10 games. For the fourth time in the last five games, the 6-10 center finished with double figures in points. He also made 8-of-12 shots, en route to his third double-double of the season. "I knew I was going to have an opportunity to get a lot of rebounds," Mohammed said. "They (the Hawks) aren't rebounding the ball well right now. The easy baskets, I give all the credit to my teammates. They find me when other people help. It's not like I am making moves to get those baskets." Mohammed's recent surge comes after an inconsistent preseason and slow start to the regular season, which he attributed to personal issues. "I think he was feeling good," New York coach Lenny Wilkens said "He's playing better. He felt good. He made a couple of shots. That was great." Stephon Marbury set the tone early as he had all 11 of his assists in the first half, with seven coming before he took his first shot. He finished with 16 points as the Knicks (5-5) moved into the first place in the Atlantic Division, despite their .500 record. Jamal Crawford scored six of his 17 points during an 11-0 run in the third quarter that gave the Knicks a 63-48 lead. He began the burst with a 3-pointer, blocked a shot by Kenny Anderson and converted a three-point play nearly two minutes later. Kurt Thomas had 12 points and 11 rebounds as New York finished with a 55-36 rebounding advantage. Antoine Walker scored 20 points and Al Harrington had 19 for the Hawks, who have lost four of five and lost despite holding a 64-46 edge in points in the paint. "It was a combination of things," Walker said. "We can't let a jump shooting team get layups and that's going to hurt you every time." The Knicks reached .500 for the second time this season and have won three of their last four games. They took the lead for good midway through the first quarter and can move above the break-even mark for the first time in nearly three years with a win at Toronto on Wednesday. "We are starting to play together," Marbury said. "Guys are communicating. When everyone is on the same string, it is easy to go at one time." The Hawks fell to 2-9 and lost two reserves in the process. Rookie guard and New York native Royal Ivey sprained his MCL in the second quarter and Predrag Drobnjak sprained his ankle in the fourth. "It's a blow. That's two blows," Atlanta first-year coach Mike Woodson said. "We're really not that deep and to lose two guys like this, if they're out, that's going to hurt our ballclub. But someone else has got to step up."
