Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Zach Randolph was last season's Most Improved Player. This season, the improvement continues. Randolph scored 20 of his 27 points in the second half as the Portland Trail Blazers defeated the Orlando Magic for the 11th straight time, 89-83. Randolph, who has scored at least 20 points in four of his last five games, had eight in a 18-6 run over the final five minutes that transformed a 75-71 deficit into a 89-81 cushion with 13 seconds remaining. "I feel like I'm their go-to guy, a franchise player," Randolph said. "To make the jump in my game this season, I've been out there playing hard, working on my game, spending extra time in the gym. Why people have doubted me, I don't know." "I asked Zach if he missed a shot tonight cause he really showed his talent," Magic forward Grant Hill said. "He (has) improved every year and is a great player. He (has) become their go-to guy and I'm really a big fan of his. But I'd rather watch him do this on television than against us." Coming off a 24-point night against Miami on Tuesday, Randolph took some extra satisfaction in playing well against Orlando, who opted not to draft him in 2001. "Orlando drafted Steven Hunter before me," Randolph said. "I can't understand that. I had one of my best (pre-draft) workouts in Orlando. I dominated all the guys that went ahead of me (in the draft)." Damon Stoudamire scored 16 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 12 and a season-high 14 rebounds for Portland, which swept the Florida teams on consecutive nights. Orlando lost for the first time in five home games this season and the first time in four games against a Western Conference opponent. Having shut down Shaquille O'Neal and Dwyane Wade in Miami on Tuesday, Stoudamire led the defensive effort against Hill and Steve Francis. Both average 20 points per game but scored 11 points apiece on combined 10-of-31 shooting. "Steve is a heck of a player," Stoudamire said. "But tonight, I just tried to keep him in front of me. He was just a little off tonight and the (three-day) layoff might have hurt him a little bit." Hedo Turkoglu came off the bench to score 13 of his season-high 27 points in a 19-5 run that gave Orlando a 75-71 lead. Turkoglu, who was 5-of-7 from the arc, connected on a 3-pointer at the end of the third period to trim Portland's lead to 66-62. Hill made three consecutive layups and rookie Dwight Howard had two dunks to help the Magic to an early 16-7 lead. But Orlando's fast break was nearly shut down in the second period.
