Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Milt Palacio provided the boost the Toronto Raptors needed. Milt Palacio scored a season-high 18 points - nearly outscoring the New York Knicks' entire second unit - as the Raptors posted an impressive 114-91 victory. Toronto was playing one day after a 102-86 loss to Washington, after which coach Sam Mitchell openly questioned his team's effort. "I don't know if it had much to do with what I said, but our guys were ready to play tonight," Mitchell said. It was the third time Toronto had played on back-to-back days this season, having lost the back end both times. After a tight first quarter, the Raptors took control as Palacio and fellow reserves Lamond Murray and Matt Bonner provided all the offense in a 15-4 run that gave Toronto a commanding 53-38 lead with 7:15 remaining in the half. "That's what the bench does on a back-to-back," Murray said. "We just tried to come in the game and continue what they were doing and try to extend the lead and that's what we were able to do." The quartet of Palacio, Murray, Bonner and Morris Peterson combined to score 28 of Toronto's 30 points in the second quarter on 12-of-15 shooting, helping the Raptors take a 63-48 lead into the third period. "That was pretty impressive," Palacio said. "The bench needs to be ready night in and night out and pick up the starters and tonight we played well." Paced by its second unit, Toronto shot 61 percent (25-of-41) after 24 minutes, including 5-of-6 from the arc. Toronto opened the second half with an 8-0 spurt, erasing any hope of a comeback by New York, and pulled away to its biggest victory ever against the Knicks. "We've been talking about getting off to a good start in the third quarter, and not letting teams back into it" Murray said. "The guys came out and put together a good third quarter and the rest was history." Vince Carter scored 14 of his 22 in the first period as the Raptors took a 33-28 lead before giving way to the bench, which outscored the Knicks' reserves, 50-24. "We just gave them too much room early," New York guard Penny Hardaway said. "Vince Carter got going and they didn't look back." Nazr Mohammed scored a season-high 25 points for the Knicks (5-6), who missed an opportunity to move above .500 for the first time since the 2001-02 season. The 114 points were a season high for the Raptors, who were playing their first game against an Atlantic Division foe. "You have to give credit to them, they made shots," Mohammed said. "It wasn't like they were getting all layups. It's just one of those games where the team out there is hot and we were still trying to figure out ways to stop them and we just didn't get it done."
