Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Lionel Hollins got off to a rocky start in his second stint as interim coach of the Memphis Grizzlies. Hollins saw Kevin Garnett score 26 points and grab 15 rebounds to lead six players in double figures as the Minnesota Timberwolves rolled to a 115-90 victory over the Grizzlies. Hollins, who had an 18-42 record when he coached the team in the 1999-2000 season, was pressed into service after the sudden retirement of Hubie Brown late Thursday. "Give the Wolves credit," Hollins said. "They came out aggressive. They knew they hadn't played well in back-to-back games. So they came out, pressed and got after us. They made us slow down our offense." "We can't use the coaching change as a scapegoat," Memphis guard Bonzi Wells said. "We played bad. We were OK in the first half. But we couldn't buy a bucket in the second half." Minnesota set season highs for baskets (42), points in a half (59), third quarter (35) and total while committing a season-low nine turnovers. "We had more energy tonight," Garnett said. "Sam kicked it off. We wanted to establish our defense. We didn't even really worry about offense. We knew that would take care of itself." "KG is the greatest player on the planet," Minnesota guard Troy Hudson said. "He's unselfish. Everything he does makes his teammates better." Sprewell, who recently scored in single digits in three consecutive games, had 22 points in three quarters, while Eddie Griffin came off the bench to add 15 for Minnesota, which shot nearly 53 percent (42-of-80). Mike Miller scored a season-high 19 points and Pau Gasol added 17 for Memphis, which has lost 20 of the last 22 meetings between the teams. Gasol looked solid despite missing the last three games due to a right ankle sprain but scored one point in the second half. "We were a little distracted by the coaching change," Gasol said. "But we still should have played better than we did. So I'm a little disappointed. We're much, much better than that." Timberwolves center Michael Olowokandi remained suspended for conduct detrimental to the team after his arrest in Indianapolis on Thursday morning. He will rejoin the team Sunday at Sacramento.
