Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks snapped a three-game losing streak with a 92-83 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. Again playing despite a sprained ankle, Nowitzki made just 6-of-17 shots but converted 11-of-13 free throws. He was one of three Mavericks to post double-doubles as Josh Howard scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Erick Dampier added 11 and 11. Dallas shot under 40 percent (31-of-78) but made up for it by outrebounding Portland, 57-33, including a 21-9 edge on the offensive boards. The Mavericks also made more free throws (27) than the Trail Blazers attempted (22). "Nothing seems to be very easy for us at this particular time. That is the way I thought the season would go early," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "I am very happy to get this win because we needed to break this streak." Portland (6-6) trailed, 43-38, at the half and never led thereafter. Derek Anderson pulled the Trail Blazers within 61-60 with a 3-pointer with 2:11 to play in the third period. "Holding them to 40 percent shooting should have been good enough to win, but their 21 offensive rebounds is what killed us," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "No question about it. It's hard to win games when you allow 21 offensive rebounds." Anderson made four 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Zach Randolph added 16 and Theo Ratliff and Shareef Abdur-Rahim each added 12 for Portland, which was 0-of-7 from 3-point range. Despite the rough shooting performance, the Mavericks scored more than 82 points for the first time since a November 19 victory over New York. "It wasn't pretty that's for sure but if you lose three in a row you have to get a win no matter how," Nowitzki said. "We weren't shooting the ball well at all, but you have to give them credit, they're a pretty good defensive team."
