Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Jeff Bzdelik's defensive scheme suffocated and frustrated the New Orleans Hornets in the fourth quarter of a record-setting performance. Bryon Russell hit a pair of 3-pointers to start a 15-2 run over the final eight minutes, helping the Denver Nuggets to a 76-67 victory over New Orleans. The points allowed was an all-time Denver franchise best. Denver had held three teams to 70 points. The most recent was the Los Angeles Clippers on November 22, 2002. The Hornets were 4-of-17 shooting and scored a season-low eight points in the final 12 minutes as they lost for the 12th time in 13 games this season, the franchise's worst start ever. "I wasn't happy with our shot selection in the fourth quarter," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "Our guys are not shooting the ball with confidence and we can't close out games because of the little things." Russell made all four of his 3-pointers in the second half and Kenyon Martin, despite playing with back spasms, grabbed all six of his rebounds in the final period. "We needed that," Russell said. "Everybody stepped up and I just happened to step up at the right time when we needed it." Denver played without Carmelo Anthony, who suffered a sprained right ankle against the Houston Rockets on Saturday, ending his regular season playing streak at 95. The Nuggets are hopeful he can play against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday. Earl Boykins came off the bench to score 18 of his 22 points in the first half for the Nuggets, who led 42-39 at intermission. He hit long-range jumpers to end each of the first two quarters in his third highest-scoring game of the season. "I give them (New Orleans) credit for coming out and playing hard," Boykins said. "Defensively, we were able to keep our guys in front of us and keep them on the perimeter, contest their shots and rebound." Andre Miller scored 14 points and Marcus Camby grabbed 11 rebounds for Denver, which has won six of its last seven and has a 7-3 home record. "We didn't let them shoot that well," Miller said. "It was a good team effort by everybody to make the final push at the end." Lee Nailon led New Orleans with 16 points. P.J. Brown added 11 and Junior Harrington 10. Hornets center Jamaal Magliore missed his second game with a dislocated right ring finger and will be out up to three months. New Orleans also has been without guard Baron Davis since November 17. "It's something we're used to," Brown said. "We've always had guys injured. Two of our main guys are out and its tough. But that's the way it is. The main thing is that we come out and play hard and we have to finish ball games." New Orleans ended its five-game road trip 1-4 and returns home to face Sacramento on Wednesday, where the Hornets are winless in six games.
