Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Devin Brown and Beno Udrih made everyone forget about Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. Brown and Udrih combined for 21 of their 32 points in the decisive fourth quarter as the San Antonio Spurs rolled to their fourth straight big win, a 107-89 trouncing of the Dallas Mavericks. "I'm ready for every minute I get on the court," said Udrih, a rookie. "Devin and I were really big off the bench." For the third straight game, the Spurs never trailed. But they saw a 17-point lead cut to 69-65 entering the final period. Coach Gregg Popovich went with his backup backcourt of Brown, a rapidly improving native of San Antonio who backs up Ginobili, and Udrih, a first-round pick from Slovenia who spells Parker. The young guards teamed with Tim Duncan to run the Mavericks ragged. "Devin and Beno were really important in us winning the game," Popovich said. "They not only played agressively, they played smart and gave us the opportunity to rest some guys." Brown scored 14 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, including three easy hoops where he beat the defense down the floor. Udrih scored seven of his 16 in the final period, repeatedly getting to the line after breaking down the defense with his dribble. In a 10-0 burst, Udrih had a free throw and set up Duncan for a hoop. Brown had two foul shots and a leakout three-point play around two from the line from Duncan, making it 88-71 with 7:20 to go. After Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki finally ended the run, Udrih took the inbounds pass and quickly fired to Brown, whose dunk demoralized Dallas. "That's part of what we do," Brown said. "When the second unit comes in, we throw it ahead and attack the rim. We did a great job." Duncan was his usual unstoppable self with 20 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks. Parker and Ginobili weren't bad, either, with 17 and 11 points, respectively. During their winning streak, the Spurs have won by no fewer than 14 points. They have beaten Dallas twice, Denver and Utah, allowing an average of just 80 points. "After losing a really bad game against Toronto and then in a back-to-back against Memphis, we started playing better, being more solid," Ginobili said. "Now we're getting some tough wins." The Spurs host Philadelphia on Wednesday night in their third back-to-back situation in the last 10 days. "We were trying to limit the starter's minutes so they could be ready for tomorrow," Brown said. "We did a pretty good job of that." Dirk Nowitzki had 21 points and 13 rebounds and Josh Howard scored 17 points for Dallas, which had 22 turnovers and just 10 assists. The Spurs took advantage by scoring 26 points off turnovers. "We had a lot of turnovers and they scored a lot of points off of them," said Howard, who scored seven points in a 17-6 run that closed the third quarter. "That was a big swing in the game." Mavericks assistant coach Avery Johnson was given the opportunity by Don Nelson to be coach against his former team. "It felt great," Johnson said. "You are just mad that you lose."
