Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Mike Bibby and Chris Webber kept the Memphis Grizzlies winless without Hubie Brown. Bibby and Webber sank key jumpers in the final minute as the Sacramento Kings held off the Grizzlies, 98-93, for their eighth victory in nine games. "Mike made a big shot and Webb followed with his, so we made the two that counted down the stretch," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "We played hard tonight, but I don't think we deserved to win," Webber said. "We went strictly on experience at the end of the game. We're lucky to get out of here with a win." Memphis lost its fourth straight game, including the last three under assistant Lionel Hollins, who took over when Brown retired due to health problems last week. "The fourth quarter tonight was a microcosm of our entire season," Hollins said. "We were close with five minutes to go but we haven't been able to close games out." Peja Stojakovic scored 29 points to pace the Kings, who were coming off a 121-110 home loss to Minnesota on Sunday in which they fell apart in the final three minutes. In this one, Sacramento took a 94-85 lead on a pair of free throws by Webber with 4:51 left, then allowed Memphis to pull within 94-93 when Pau Gasol split a pair of free throws with 1:53 to go. After a series of fruitless possessions, the Grizzlies appeared as though they would take the lead when forward Mike Miller drove for a layup. But Bibby - who scored just seven points - slapped the ball off Miller's leg out of bounds with 59 seconds left, then nailed a jumper 16 seconds later after head-faking Memphis guard Earl Watson. "Sometimes they go in, sometimes they don't," Bibby said. "I never shoot off the pump fake. That's why I'm surprised it went in." Bibby had made just 2-of-9 shots before sinking the jumper. "I told Mike he was overdue," Adelman said. "He had a good look and he shot that one like he'd been having a good game the whole game. It was a huge shot." "Mike always hits big shots," Webber said. "We knew he was going to do that. He can go 2-for-9 or whatever he was and still hit the last one." Watson turned the ball over with 31 seconds left, and Webber - who collected 22 points, 11 rebounds and six assists - iced the game with a leaning jumper in the lane after pump-faking Gasol to clear space. "(It) was a fun shot," Webber said. "Usually when a guy comes and you pump-fake, you dribble all the way in or you take one dribble and shoot a jump shot. But I saw Greg (Ostertag) in the paint and I knew his big butt was going to tip it or touch it if I missed, so I just tried to float it up with the one hand, and fortunately I made it." Miller scored 25 points off the bench and Gasol added 22 and 13 rebounds for Memphis. "It's tough, no doubt," Miller said. "The bottom line is that we have been in every game that we have played until the last few minutes. We just aren't closing games right now and it is difficult. We have to be tougher and make our shots."
