Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Sam Cassell scored 26 points and the Minnesota Timberwolves clamped down on the Golden State Warriors in the fourth quarter of a 107-99 victory, their third straight triumph. Cassell shot 9-of-18 from the field and 8-of-8 from the line, adding a career high-tying 11 rebounds and eight assists in a terrific all-around game. Wally Szczerbiak added 20 points for Minnesota, which outscored Golden State, 29-15, over the final 12 minutes. "They made some shots, they played hard and they played well," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "We came out strong, then we took KG (Kevin Garnett) out of the game. Then we came roaring back, and to our credit, we came back in the fourth, played better defense and were able to make plays down the stretch." Jason Richardson scored on a reverse layup and Derek Fisher followed with a jumper to give the Warriors a 91-87 lead with 8:39 to play. From there, the Timberwolves took over. "It's a win man. They played good today and they took their best shot," Cassell said. "They wouldn't go away. They would not lay down, so they showed their pride today, but we also hung in there, put together a couple of good runs and won the game." Minnesota went on a 9-0 run to take the lead for good. Cassell scored four points and Szczerbiak hit 3-of-4 free throws in the spurt. "We definitely understand we pride ourselves on executing down the stretch," Cassell said. "We've got to execute on time, score and situation. Work the clock, get a shot up and that's what we did tonight." Troy Murphy had 25 points and a season-high 17 rebounds for Golden State but was unable to get untracked in the fourth quarter. Richardson added 21 points and seven assists for the Warriors. "We came out and played hard," Murphy said. "We hadn't played well the last couple of games. We had been down 20 (points) at various times. They're a good team, went deep in the playoffs last year and we strive to be like them." Golden State has yet to post a victory against a winning team and has lost every game when failing to score 100 points. "We don't like the results, but we can live with the effort and the energy," Warriors coach Mike Montgomery said. "If we do that every game, I think the results will take care of itself. We saw some improvement and we will build on this." Garnett had 17 points and 16 rebounds and Latrell Sprewell scored 15 points for Minnesota, which held a 29-27 lead after one quarter but fell behind at the break, 54-51, and trailed by six points entering the final period. "The Warriors looked a little more stable, more guided," Garnett said. "The first quarter we had a nice rhythm going, it just fell apart. We had to regain ourselves, our composure, our lead and the momentum, and it took us until the fourth quarter to do that. But we started to make defensive stops and pull away with it."
