Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers and superstar Paul Pierce did not see eye-to-eye. Milwaukee Bucks coach Terry Porter did not like what he saw. Rivers briefly benched a pouting Pierce in the fourth quarter before the Celtics received a favorable whistle in the closing seconds of a 101-100 victory over the slumping Bucks. With 4:45 left in a one-point game, Rivers admonished Pierce to "go to the hoop" while on a fast break. When Pierce appeared to ignore him, Rivers had Jiri Welsch replace his best player. "I wanted everybody to run the floor," said Rivers, whose team had a 22-2 edge in fast-break points. "I didn't think he was running the floor on the last couple of possessions, so I took him out. I don't mind him being upset at all. I made my point and I put him back in the game." Pierce sat at the far end of the bench until the 2:54 mark, when he was reinserted. Fourteen seconds later, he nailed a 3-pointer to give Boston a 97-93 lead. "There was just a little misunderstanding," said Celtics guard Gary Payton, who was left to do the explaining when Pierce left without speaking to reporters. "When I got out there (coming out of a timeout), I ran to him and told him, 'We don't need that, we need wins.' That's why I went right to him on the next play." The Celtics held on - barely. After Payton split a pair of free throws to give Boston a 100-98 lead with 8.6 seconds left, Bucks guard Maurice Williams made a one-handed leaner over rookie Tony Allen but was called for clearing out with his left arm. Williams and Porter complained but to no avail. "It surprised me," Williams said. "It was the right call to make. But let the players decide the game." When Williams was told Allen was a rookie, the second-year guard could only respond with "Wow." Pierce, who scored 23 points, had a chance to seal the win but also split two free throws with three seconds to go. Milwaukee tried to go to All-Star Michael Redd, who was heavily guarded. Keith Van Horn took the pass, drove for a layup and appeared to be fouled by Ricky Davis, but no foul was called. "That was a foul," Porter said. "I've seen the replay and it was a foul. If they're going to call the call on (Williams), which I think was the correct call, then you have to call the other one." "There's not a lot of consistency," Van Horn said. "We should have at least been into overtime." Mark Blount had 16 points and a season-high 16 rebounds for the Celtics, who have won two in a row after a four-game slide. Redd scored 23 points and Van Horn added 21 for the Bucks, who fell to 0-7 on the road, their worst start since losing their first 16 road contests in the 1976-77 season. There were four lead changes in the fourth quarter, the last at 94-93 on two free throws by Welsch with 3:33 to go and Pierce on the bench.
