Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Washington Wizards were handed the perfect opponent to help continue their recent success. Larry Hughes scored 19 points and Juan Dixon added 17 off the bench as the Wizards posted their sixth win in seven games, a 114-90 triumph over the lowly Atlanta Hawks. Washington improved to 9-5, its best start since beginning the 1974-75 season with an 11-2 mark. "Actually, we're 2-0 in December," guard Gilbert Arenas said. "We're not worrying about last month, we're just worrying about this month." In suffering their eighth consecutive loss, the Hawks never held a lead and literally threw away the game in the first quarter, committing nine turnovers. "I could just tell they were scrambled," said Hughes, who set the tone for Washington with five steals in the first period. "I don't know what (the Hawks) were doing. We were just able to jump on everything they were doing." With 6:07 to go in the first quarter and Washington ahead, 15-13, Hughes ignited a 21-2 run with a 3-pointer. The guard scored nine points during the spurt, which culminated with Arenas' 3-pointer with 40 seconds to go that gave the Wizards a 36-15 cushion. "We came out and did what we're supposed to do," Arenas said. "Our offense is just good. We just did what we did. We're the second-leading scoring team in the league, so that's what we do - we score." Arenas and Antawn Jamison each scored 13 points as seven players were in double figures for the Wizards, who led by as many as 35 in the fourth quarter. "I thought we played very well - our starters at the beginning and in our problem area, the third quarter," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "And that was a key factor for us, to come out and be as sharp in the third as we were finishing out the first (half). So I am glad that we did that." The Hawks, who have lost by as many as 40 points this season, ended the game with a 13-4 run, powered by 11 points from rookie forward Josh Smith. "We were never in the game," fellow rookie Josh Childress said. "We just need to find something and stick with it. We play hard and we play well one night, and the next night it's a game like this." Antoine Walker blamed Atlanta's recent failures on the roster turnover. Just second-year guard Boris Diaw began last season with the Hawks. "When you have an eight-game losing streak, everybody starts nitpicking," Walker said. "Leaders? What can you lead when you are losing by 30 points? We don't have any leaders on this team. We don't have an identity. You have to build leaders." Walker had 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawks, who fell to 1-7 at home and 2-13 overall - the worst start in the club's 37-year history in Atlanta. "It was one of those games where we didn't compete from the beginning to the end, and that's inexcusable," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "These guys get paid big money to play. We just didn't compete tonight, bottom line."
