Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Last week, the Indiana Pacers were riding emotion and a sense of unity. This week, they are riding a four-game losing streak. Despite the return of Reggie Miller, the Pacers went winless on their road trip with a 104-96 loss to the lowly Golden State Warriors, who had seven players in double figures. "Right now we don't have much margin for error," Indiana coach Rick Carlisle said. "Everybody has to play at a very high level to be successful." After the brawl in the Palace of Auburn Hills on November 19 that led to the suspensions of five players - including their top three scorers - the Pacers closed ranks and went 3-1 on a homestand with a depleted roster, playing inspired basketball. Indiana embarked on a four-game swing with the best record in the Eastern Conference. But losses to Seattle, the Los Angeles Clippers and Sacramento were followed by this shoddy defensive performance against Golden State, which came in 27th in the NBA at 88.8 points per game. "The last two games on the trip were disappointing from the standpoint of where we were a week ago," Carlisle said. "You could make excuses about fatigue and our situation but we've continuously said we're not going to do that. We need to compete at a higher level especially on the road, and the last two games we simply didn't do that. "It'll be good to get back home, but as always, getting home doesn't guarantee that things are going to just turn. We're going to get Jeff (Foster) back which, will be a boost to us. But we're going to need to lift our level of play up from where it's been the last two games. I'm sure our home crowd will help that, but we can't rely on them to just simply get us over the hump. We're going to have to play better." Not even the return of Miller could spark the Pacers. The NBA's all-time leader in 3-pointers missed the first 15 games with a broken left hand, then sat out Friday's loss at Sacramento serving his one-game suspension. "There are things that are so common in basketball - effort, moving the basketball and playing hard," Miller said. "If you do those common things, it doesn't matter who's out there on the court." Miller got the start and responded with 23 points, making 4-of-6 3-pointers. But he was burned by Calbert Cheaney at the other end of the floor and could not lift the Pacers past one of the worst teams in the league. "It would've been nice to win one or two of these games out west," Miller said. "You've got to compliment Rick and the coaching staff, because yes, we're getting players back, but he's going to have a different lineup the next week and a half. So if the guys can somehow hold down the fort until the cavalry gets here, we'll be OK. But we've got to play much better and much harder than we're doing now." Indiana guard Jamaal Tinsley had 18 points and 11 assists but suffered a sprained right ankle in the third quarter. He had to be helped to the locker room and returned briefly in the final period, although he was ineffective. "This is a tough situation for us knowing the type of situation we're in," Tinsley said. "Tonight we came out and laid an egg. They just outplayed us all around, getting to loose balls, they just wanted it more." Overall, the Pacers were ineffective, especially on defense. The Warriors took the lead for good in the second quarter and repelled several rallies to snap a four-game slide. "In the first half we didn't compete the way we're capable of," Indiana forward Austin Croshere said. "We gave up 50-something points to a team averaging 87 points a game. We definitely competed in the second half, but in some unfortunate situations we had to call timeouts to stop runs, couldn't call plays late in the game. " Indiana closed to 90-83 with just over five minutes to go and appeared to have a fast break when rookie center David Harrison blocked a shot off the backboard. But the Warriors corralled the loose ball, and Richardson hammered home a miss with his left hand, then added a nifty layup for a 94-83 lead with 4:35 left. Cheaney made a pair of jumpers over Miller before Richardson had another dunk to seal it at 102-92 with 1:13 remaining. Richardson scored 19 points, Troy Murphy added 17 and 12 rebounds, Mikael Pietrus scored 15 points and Cheaney added 14 for Golden State. "A win feels good," Golden State coach Mike Montgomery said. "Everybody's spirits get picked up a little bit. This is a tough stretch with four games in five nights. The positive is that guys feel a little bit better about what's going on and what we're doing. Basically, we've got to try to win games by any means possible. We can't fall back on anything, we've just got to use whatever combination of players we can."
