Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- The combination of Dwyane Wade and Damon Jones kept the Utah Jazz in a slump. Wade scored 23 points and Jones made career-high seven 3-pointers as the Miami Heat posted a 100-80 triumph over the Jazz, who have lost five straight games and nine of 11. Jones hit two 3-pointers while Wade scored seven points - including a spectacular dunk from near the foul line - in a decisive 19-2 run in the third quarter that gave Miami a 77-59 lead with 2:27 remaining in the period. "Damon did a great job tonight stepping up tonight with some big shots," Wade said. "Once his confidence gets up, he's one of the best shooters around." Shaquille O'Neal, who capped the run with a an alley-oop dunk, also grabbed his 10,000th career rebound in the quarter. The All-Star center finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds. O'Neal played down the mark, referring to it as "Just another milestone." Instead, he talked about the team's performance. "Tonight was one of the first times that we played a good, solid 48 minutes," he said. "We knew that we needed this win - we just let one get away in Denver. I had a lot of silly fouls tonight, I know I've got to stay out of foul trouble. But I think there was a lesson - when I'm out of the game, the guys still play hard, they play well." Wade concurred with his center's opinion of the team's performance. "We really started playing basketball, we started establishing Shaq on the inside and that got our inside-outside game going," he added. "Damon Jones did a great job knocking down some big shots in that run. We played good there - that was probably the best stretch that we've played all season so far." For Jones - who came into the game averaging 9.6 points per game - it was a night to remember. In addition to his season-high 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting, he also dished out six assists. "When you have Shaq and Dwyane Wade attacking at all times, teams are going to have to adjust to that," Jones said. "Tonight, I was able to get some open looks, and fortunately enough I was able to make a few of them." Wade came out strong, scoring eight first-quarter points as the Heat opened a 29-17 lead. But the Jazz rallied in the second quarter behind rookie Kris Humphries and Matt Harpring, who scored eight points apiece in the period to help Utah cut the deficit to 49-46 at the half. "Right now, I don't know if we have enough confidence to play against anybody," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "We get a little thing going and then all of a sudden we just can't seem to sustain it. We miss a couple of shots, we feel sorry for ourselves and then give up easy baskets at the other end of the court." It was the first time the Heat have won at the Delta Center since November 11, 2000 and the first time they have swept the season series. "We played good in spurts and we played bad in spurts," said Utah forward Carlos Boozer, who collected 11 points and 10 rebounds. "We have to find a way to play great or good consistently. Having highs and lows during the game isn't cutting it at this level." Harpring and rookie Kirk Snyder had 12 points apiece for the Jazz, who shot only 39 percent (28-of-72) and allowed the Heat to connect on 52 percent (34-of-66).
