Game StoryHOUSTON (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady and Andre Barrett did in the New Orleans Hornets down the stretch. McGrady scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half and rookie Andre Barrett added a season-high 14 as the Houston Rockets posted an 89-81 victory over the hapless Hornets, who have lost seven in a row. Barrett took advantage of the Hornets' double-teaming McGrady and Yao Ming to score 10 points in the final period. "This is a crazy game," said Barrett, whose previous high was eight. "You don't know what can happen, and it can happen at any time. When I started off (the season), I was on the injured reserve list and I'm pretty much sure nobody knew anything about me." "Well, if you're going to play on a team with those two guys (McGrady and Yao), you're going to have spot-up shots because people are going to commit two people to them," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "Certainly the shots (Barrett) made tonight were huge; we were stuck in the mud there for a little bit." McGrady was caught off guard by his teammate's ability. "What really caught me by surprise is (Barrett's) poise, his poise late in games," McGrady said. "As a rookie, you don't expect guys to take those shots, and a lot of guys shy away from times like that. But he is taking on that challenge and he's doing a hell of a job pushing the ball, getting us into our offense and knocking down shots when needed." Despite scoring a season-low 30 first-half points, the Hornets rallied to within 54-53 late in the third period. But McGrady countered with a 3-pointer on the Rockets' next possession to begin a 14-3 run. Dan Dickau, playing his second game since being acquired from Dallas, rallied New Orleans by scoring all but one of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to help trim the deficit to 77-72 with just under three minutes to go. "Those are the first real minutes I have had all year," Dickau added. "It felt great. I wanted to stay patient but still maintain my aggressiveness." "Well we had problems (down the stretch); we couldn't stop them," Van Gundy said. "Dan Dickau was a whirling dervish. We shot better and we guarded no one. As we step up in class here, it'll be fun to see what we can do." McGrady countered with back-to-back jumpers as the Rockets' lead never slipped below six the rest of the way. After averaging just over 12 points in a four-game stretch, Yao, who scored 21 points, reached the 20-point mark for the second straight game. He also grabbed nine rebounds as he helped Houston to 41-29 advantage off the glass. The league-worst Hornets (1-15) were offensively inept in the first half, shooting 29 percent (10-of-34) from the field and getting outscored in the paint, 24-4. "I was visibly upset with the team at halftime because we weren't playing hard," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "We came out and played our best game of basketball in the second half, and I told the team after the game that is the way we have to play all of the time. I told them I was proud of the second half." David Wesley scored 18 points and Lee Nailon recovered from a 1-of-9 start to score 15 for the Hornets. "We are having trouble getting our rhythm for everybody at the same time," Wesley said. "We are getting good looks, but some of us are pressing too much because we want to win so badly."
