Game StoryMEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Earl Watson knew a victory over the New York Knicks would be simply elementary. Watson scored a career-high 22 points and led four players in double figures to help the Memphis Grizzlies to a 96-88 victory over the New York Knicks. Watson scored just one point in Wednesday's loss to the Knicks in New York. But he got the start for Jason Williams, who was placed on the injured list with a sore right foot, and sank 9-of-10 shots. "I've had a lot of success (starting) for J-Will in the past," Watson said. "It's easier to get in a groove when your starting because you know when minutes are coming. You can do a lot more things." The tiny point guard also handed out five assists and helped limit Stephon Marbury to nine points on 2-of-12 shooting. Marbury scored 26 points against Memphis six days ago but had just one point through three quarters after picking up his fourth foul with 4:28 left in the third period. "Stephon had a great game last game," Watson said. "I knew I had to come in here and play both ends of the court and challenge him because if not, if he comes at you and you're passive, he'll tear you apart." "It was definitely hard tonight, especially with me getting into foul trouble," Marbury said. "I think we play a lot better when we are scoring the ball. But we have to play better ball than this." The Grizzlies blocked 14 shots and made 8-of-11 3 pointers in gaining a split of the season series for the fifth straight campaign and handing the Knicks their third consecutive defeat. "We played terrible defense," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "They kept attacking the basket and we kept giving and giving." Little-used Jake Tsakalidis and Shane Battier each had three baskets during a 19-4 run in the third quarter that gave Memphis a 78-63 lead. Mike Miller, who briefly left the game with late in the first half with a sprained right wrist, scored 20 points and Pau Gasol added 16, helping Memphis improve to 2-1 since Mike Fratello took over as coach. "I thought that each time we pulled away, it was because of a transition run that we got," Fratello said. "It was those spurts that we ran and got these easy baskets that I think made the difference in the game. We had 24 fast-break points, which is nice." "It felt good to execute in the fourth quarter and finally take control of a game," Gasol said. "It also felt good to see Earl play well. He was very aggressive." Jamal Crawford scored 17 points and Nazr Mohammed added 16 and 12 rebounds for the Knicks. Star guard Allan Houston did not dress for this game after the Knicks activated him from the injured list.
