Game StoryMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki wasn't about to be shut down on consecutive nights. Nowitzki scored 23 of his 34 points in the second half as he lit up Kevin Garnett and led the Dallas Mavericks to a convincing 97-87 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, who had a five-game winning streak snapped. The NBA's leading scorer at 27.4 points per game, Nowitzki was limited to 6-of-24 shooting by rangy Rasheed Wallace in Monday's loss to Detroit. In this one, he was matched up against Garnett, another of the league's top defensive power forwards. "Kevin's fun to play against," Nowitzki said. "He's so competitive. He's one of the best in the league." Nowitzki scored 11 points in the first half but came alive with 12 points in the third quarter, when Dallas took the lead for good. He finished 13-of-26 from the field. "I wasn't missing a lot in warmups and that gave me confidence," Nowitzki said. "I had a good feeling about the whole game." "Dirk's playing well," Garnett said. "He's in a nice groove." In the final period, Nowitzki had a basket in a key 6-0 spurt that pushed the lead to double digits, then had a pair of hoops that let the Timberwolves know there would be no comeback. First, the 7-footer drained a long 3-pointer to give the Mavericks an 85-73 lead with 5:38 to go. After a basket by Garnett, Nowitzki drained a 15-footer while drawing a foul. His free throw made it 88-75 with 5:06 left, and Minnesota got no closer than eight points thereafter. "He hit some big shots. That's what he's been doing all year," Garnett said. "You can't really get near him. It makes it difficult to guard him sometimes." Garnett had 32 points and 12 rebounds but also encountered foul trouble, taking a seat early in the final period before returning midway through. Josh Howard had 13 points and 12 rebounds, Alan Henderson had 11 and 15 and Erick Dampier 11 and 11 for the Mavericks, who held a 54-35 advantage on the boards and scored a staggering 24 second-chance points. "They had three guys with double figures in rebounds?" asked Garnett. "It's hard (for us) to win a game like that." "You have to tip your hat to Alan Henderson," said Dallas assistant Avery Johnson, who took over the team after coach Don Nelson was ejected just 1:33 into the game. "Alan does so much for us. When he can guard the opponent's best scorer, that really frees Dirk up offensively." "I got some extra minutes tonight," said Henderson, one of two spot starters for the Mavericks. "I just tried to get my hands on (loose balls), get a tip, keep it alive." Recently acquired Darrell Armstrong started at point guard and had six points and six assists. Rookie Devin Harris, who had been starting, did not play. Wally Szczerbiak scored 18 points for the Timberwolves, who were without Latrell Sprewell. The swingman was suspended by the NBA for shouting obscenities at a female fan in Los Angeles on Saturday.
