Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- While two of their top players struggled through foul trouble and poor shooting, the Miami Heat needed someone to step up. Udonis Haslem responded. Haslem scored 20 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and added a career-high six assists to lead a balanced effort as the Heat finished a successful road trip with a 101-96 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. Haslem, who fell one rebound shy of matching a season high, led five scorers in double figures as Miami ended its road trip with back-to-back wins and a 3-1 record. "We don't usually run our offense through (Haslem), but tonight he had it going," Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said. After a sluggish first half that saw the Bucks take a 41-38 lead into the locker room, Haslem led the Heat's third-quarter charge. He scored eight points and swiped seven boards, helping his club win the quarter, 32-22. "We kept grinding and executed without the big fella (center Shaquille O'Neal) in there tonight," Haslem said. "We just made plays and it was one of those nights for me." Haslem finished Miami's scoring with a pair of free throws to cap a 12-of-12 effort from the line. The Heat made 29-of-33 free throws. Riddled with early foul trouble, O'Neal scored only four points in eight minutes in the first half. Guard Eddie Jones was just 1-of-7 for two points through three quarters. "Shaq just didn't get to play tonight," Van Gundy said. "But, this is the best I have felt about this team all season long, because that is a type of game that can be very frustrating, so to get that win you feel good about things." O'Neal got things going when his team needed it, however, scoring consecutive baskets to give Miami an 87-80 lead with 2:50 left. He finished with 18 points in 21 minutes and left without speaking to reporters. "When you look at (O'Neal) only playing 21 minutes, you would like to think you can win that game, but they had other guys step up for them," Milwaukee coach Terry Porter said. Jones, who scored 46 total points in two earlier games vs. the Bucks, was frustrated all night. He managed to finish on a good note, hitting his only 3-pointer and first basket since early in the first quarter for a 92-83 lead with 52 seconds remaining. Dwyane Wade scored 17 points and had 10 assists and Rasual Butler came off the bench to score 14 for the Heat, who shot 53 percent (19-of-36) from the floor in the second half. Milwaukee also was without a big contribution from its star as Michael Redd scored just 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting. Forward Keith Van Horn missed his second straight game with a sprained ankle. "We're all professionals and we need to come out and play hard, but we're still playing good basketball," Redd said. "They just came out and beat us tonight." Veteran Kendall Gill, signed Monday and playing in his first home game with the Bucks, picked up some of the slack with 14 points off the bench. "I just want to bring energy to the mix," Gill said. "Once Keith Van Horn and the rest of the guys get back, I don't think these games will slip away." Milwaukee got its first road win of the season Tuesday at Indiana but faltered in the second half in this one, losing for the 10th time in its last 12 games and falling to 0-3 vs. Miami this season.
