Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Mike Woodson's team had its most impressive victory of the season against Woodson's former boss. Tony Delk and Peja Drobnjak scored 16 points apiece off the bench to lead the Atlanta Hawks to a surprisingly easy 88-72 victory over the Detroit Pistons. "I've been here two years and I haven't seen any worse than that," Detroit point guard Chauncey Billups said. "That was horrible. We all have to take responsibility for that. The effort was bad. The execution was bad. The defense was horrible." Woodson, an assistant on last season's NBA champions, received his championship ring from Detroit coach Larry Brown before the game, then watched his Hawks hold the Pistons to a season-low 31 percent shooting (23-of-75). "Larry means a lot to me," Woodson said. "The guy taught me a lot about this game in terms of coaching. So it's tough to play against a guy like that. I'm sure he feels the same way. But this is a big win for our ballclub." Delk and Antoine Walker hit buzzer-beating 3-pointers from just inside halfcourt to end the first two quarters as the Hawks opened a 56-38 lead at intermission. "I thought we came out and shot the ball well," Delk said. "But we played really good defense. We played on both ends of the court and competed tonight. And I think the last three games, we've really competed. We just need to keep building on it." Rookie Josh Smith had two dunks and another hoop in a 12-2 run that opened the third quarter and extended Atlanta's lead to 68-40. "That was a whole lot of fun," Smith said. "I got my first start and I got to go all-out against a great team. We knew we had to get out fast against them because they're such a great defensive team." Al Harrington scored 15 points and Walker added 13 for the Hawks, who have won two of three after a nine-game losing streak. Atlanta won at the Palace of Auburn Hills for just the third time in its last 19 visits. Richard Hamilton scored 24 points for Detroit, which tied a franchise low for points at The Palace. Brown blamed the loss on allowing dribble penetration and poor shot selection. "When you're having a hard time guarding, you have to be more disciplined offensively," Brown said. "We haven't thought about that much this year. We think we can just go out and play any way, take any shot and everything's going to be OK. You get exposed when you don't have your big guys to bail you out." Already without Rasheed Wallace (sore right hamstring) and Antonio McDyess (left calf strain), the Pistons lost rookie swingman Carlos Delfino after the first half with a right knee strain.
