Game StoryWASHINGTON (Ticker) -- A big second half from Larry Hughes, coupled with too many mistakes, sealed a familiar fate for the New Orleans Hornets. Hughes scored all of his 15 points in the second half, and the Hornets were guilty of an NBA season-high 33 turnovers as the Washington Wizards coasted to an 88-69 victory. "You will cause a lot of turnovers when you get out and are running and jumping and doing some things to mess them up," said Hughes, who leads the league with 56 steals. "We wanted to get in the passing lanes and make them do things they didn't want to do." Washington improved to 12-6 with the win, its best start through 18 games since going 13-5 to open the 1974-75 season. The Hornets became the first NBA team to lose 10 straight games this season and fell to 1-18. Hughes, who shot 0-for-6 in the first half, scored 11 points as the Wizards took control with an 18-0 run in the third quarter. "I don't worry about Larry struggling too long," said Wizards forward Antawn Jamison, who scored 17 points. "He had some open shots that weren't falling in for him. He's one of those guys that's not going to try to do too much, but in the third quarter he really sparked us with his offensive play. He was stealing the ball and converting at the offensive end. "It was just a matter of time until he caught on fire." Brendan Haywood, who also scored 17 points, capped the run with a tip-in 5:35 after intermission. New Orleans rebounded with a 14-4 surge to close the third quarter, but Washington put together an 11-2 spurt early in the final period to build a 77-57 cushion. Gilbert Arenas had 16 points and a season-high six steals for the Wizards, who did not record their 12th win last season until January 19. "It wasn't pretty, but defensively we got it done," Jamison said. "We threw different things at them and made them take tough shots. Our defense was really the key today. When you've got guys like Gilbert and Larry out there stealing balls on every occasion, it becomes contagious and everybody else gets into it." Eight Wizards had at least one steal as Washington set a season high with 20. "They lead the league in steals and we played right into their hands," said Hornets guard David Wesley, who finished with 12 points, four assists and five turnovers. "They applied pressure and we panicked. We started gambling and it gives you energy when you start causing turnovers and getting transitions. The game got out of hand." Dan Dickau and Junior Harrington each scored 14 points off the bench for the Hornets, who have dropped 10 straight games for the first time since the 1990-91 season. P.J. Brown scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds but turned the ball over seven times as New Orleans tied a franchise record for giveaways set November 23, 1993, also against Washington. "We telegraphed pretty much every pass," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "When you have 33 turnovers it is going to be hard to win the basketball game. What they were able to do was just beat our guys up. We are not used to that."
