Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- With his good friend Paul Pierce watching from the sidelines, Ricky Davis sparked the Boston Celtics to a wild win in Los Angeles, capping a five-game road trip in dramatic fashion. Davis scored 28 of his season-high 34 points after the third quarter, leading the Celtics to an improbable 134-127 victory in double overtime against the Clippers. "It showed toughness of the guys," said Davis, who also matched a season high with six assists in 38 minutes. "You know, we just got stops at the right minutes, at the right times, that's what we got to do." Boston trailed, 102-90, with less than six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but rallied to win its second straight game on the swing after dropping the first three. "That was just one amazing basketball game," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said, "Boy I tell you, our guys really fought." Pierce kept the Celtics in the game through the first three quarters before running into foul trouble. He fouled out with 3:34 left in regulation with 33 points on 12-of-17 shooting. But Pierce's efforts ended up as just a footnote after Davis' surge down the stretch. Davis scored 19 points in the fourth, including nine after Pierce left, making a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining to tie the game, 109-109, and force overtime. "Everybody contributed you know, this is a team win." Pierce said. "You know, you look at Ricky Davis and say he had a hell of a performance and you know without the rest of these guys to get him there he wouldn't have been in the position to help us win. He was huge for us." In the second extra session, Davis started the scoring on an alley-oop slam just six seconds in and finished the period with seven points and two assists. His driving layup and free throw in the closing seconds capped the win. "You got to credit Ricky Davis," said Clippers forward Corey Maggette. "And Gary Payton, which is a veteran player. Ricky bailed his team out tonight, definitely bailed his team out. Making shots and driving to the basket and making easy dump passes." "Just a gutsy effort," Rivers said. "Paul Pierce fouls out, we had a lot of reasons why we should have gone home, and our guys just fought and sure that's the mental toughness we talked about. Boy, just a great win for our team. Great, great win." Payton scored 15 points, including six in the second overtime, and dished out nine assists. His layup with 35 seconds left gave Boston the lead for good, 129-127. The loss ends Los Angeles' run of 12 straight games in the state of California on a sour note. The Clippers split the 12 games and finished their season-high seven-game homestand at 4-3. "We have to use this loss to gain experience and learn from our mistakes," Los Angeles coach Mike Dunleavy said. "There is no sense in pointing the finger at anyone. We play as a team. We lose as a team. We did a lot of good things but we just had some unlucky things happen." Maggette scored a career-high 38 points and forced the second overtime with a 3-pointer with 48 seconds left. Elton Brand returned from a one-game suspension to score 24 points and grab a season-high 18 rebounds. "It will go down in the books as a loss but hopefully we can capitalize on it and get better tomorrow," Maggette said. "We can't get this game back, all we can do is worry about tomorrow and try to get that one."
