Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal picked up the slack when Dwyane Wade was injured Monday night. Two nights later, Wade returned the favor. Wade scored 14 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter and added nine assists as the Miami Heat completed a season sweep of the Washington Wizards with their sixth straight win, a 98-93 victory. "We made plays in the end," Wade said. "We need to play with fierceness knowing that this is a team that can hit shots and put you away. It's very big to sweep them this early because this is a team that's only going to get better throughout the season." Wade sprained his ankle Monday against the Wizards, and O'Neal responded with a season-high 40 points. In this one, the superstar center played most of the fourth quarter in foul trouble. "We know when he leaves the game, we have to step up and make plays," Wade said of O'Neal, who fouled out with one minute left. "We had confidence when he went out that we were going to get the win." Moments later, Wade penetrated into the lane, then dished back to Damon Jones, who hit his fifth 3-pointer to give Miami a 95-93 lead with 21 seconds left. "Dwyane Wade, as usual, did a good job of making plays," Jones said. "Because of it, I was able to get a rhythm and able to make shots. I had to get pumped up because in the first half, I was kind of lackadaisical. I had some open shots I didn't make and I was very frustrated." Antawn Jamison, who led the Wizards with 26 points, had his potential tying 18-footer blocked by former Wizard Christian Laettner with 12 seconds remaining. "We just didn't get it done," Jamison said. "I take a lot of the responsibility offensively. I took some bad shots and some shots didn't go in, but that's part of the game. We got the ball in the right people's hands, but we weren't able to convert." O'Neal had 13 points and 12 rebounds but missed 7-of-8 free throws. "This is the first time in my career when I go out of the game, or even foul out, that I'm not worried," O'Neal said. "Because I know I've got Mike (Doleac) and Christian (Laettner) to back me up." Gilbert Arenas scored 22 points and Larry Hughes added 19 for the Wizards, who outrebounded the Heat, 55-45, but made just 2-of-17 3-pointers. "Saying that this one was a tough one to lose is an understatement," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "It was one of those nights where you seem like you're not getting the break, whether it's a loose ball or a call. You're going to have nights like that in the NBA." Wade said the Wizards have nothing to hang their heads about. "They stack up pretty good against the East because they have three guys who can really fill it up," Wade said. "That's what we're trying to get every night, a consistent three guys. This is a team that not only can score but they're very scrappy."
