Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- After flying 5,543 miles and playing their seventh game in 11 days, the road-weary Denver Nuggets had no answer for the Orlando Magic's up-tempo offense. Cuttino Mobley scored 19 points and the Magic scored a season-high 33 fast-break points en route a 117-95 blowout of the shorthanded Nuggets. It was the 12th straight loss in DisneyWorld for Denver, which was without Carmelo Anthony due to a sprained left ankle. The Nuggets lost four of the final five games on their seven-game road trip after starting with back-to-back victories. "We were simply manhandled tonight in every phase of the game from the opening tip," Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "We were not just one step behind them. We were two or three steps behind the whole night, plain and simple. Whether Carmelo was here or not, to get beat in transition like we were, to not defend the basket had nothing to do with his absence." Grant Hill scored 14 of his 16 points and Orlando shot season-high 68 percent (26-of-38) in the first half en route to a 64-50 lead. Orlando hit 16 of its first 20 shots in the game, turning a 26-21 first-period lead into a 41-26 cushion just under two minutes into the second quarter. Six players scored in the 15-5 run, which was capped with a basket by Hedo Turkoglu. "We just came out and tried to be aggressive," Hill said. "They had played last night, and we wanted to come out the gate and get a good start. It's always dangerous when their best player's not in there, because there's a tendency to get complacent. We wanted to come out and take care of business after losing three straight." Six players scored in double figures for the Magic, which limited Denver to 12 points on the fast break. "I think it's great for us that we were able to get up and down the court the whole game," Magic guard Steve Francis said. "It's hard when you're playing the last game in a road trip. We were just in that same situation. I'm just out there trying to get guys off. Once guys are scoring, they feel better and start playing hard defensively." Orlando held a 72-59 lead midway through the third quarter before Mobley scored nine points in a 25-7 run that closed the period and opened 97-66 bulge. The quicksilver guard had two 3-pointers and a three-point play. "Some teams start the third quarter kind of flat," Mobley said. "We wanted to come out hard because we knew we had a tough game in Miami (Sunday) and fighting and wrestling with Denver was not a smart move." Rookie Dwight Howard had 17 points and nine rebounds, Turkoglu scored 14 points and Francis added 12 and 11 assists for Orlando, which outscored Denver, 68-46, in the paint. Rookie Jameer Nelson added 10 points for the Magic, including a basket early in the fourth quarter that gave Orlando its largest lead, 103-68. DerMarr Johnson had season highs of 18 points and eight rebounds for the Nuggets. Kenyon Martin scored 16 points and Andre Miller, Earl Boykins and Rodney White each added 13 for Denver, which did not lead after the 9:36 mark of the opening quarter.
