Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics took their first lead late and ultimately led when it mattered most. Mark Blount led seven players in double figures with 22 points and Boston used a big fourth quarter run to knock off the New York Knicks, 114-109. Trailing 84-80 heading into the final quarter, Boston took its first lead of the game with seven consecutive points. A dunk by Paul Pierce capped what became an 18-3 run that gave the Celtics a 98-87 lead with 6:24 to play. "We picked up our defense in the fourth quarter," Pierce said. Boston led by as many as 12 points in the final quarter and kept the margin comfortable down the stretch. Tim Thomas hit a 3-pointer to make it 112-109 with under 10 seconds left before Marcus Banks made a pair of free throws to ice it. "Marcus Banks was terrific tonight," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "With his speed, instead of playing around with the ball and dancing, today he came off the screen and used his speed." A second-year point guard, Banks played a majority of the fourth quarter, keeping veteran Gary Payton on the bench. Banks scored all 11 of his points in the fourth period and helped contain Stephon Marbury, holding him to 12 points on 5-of-17 shooting. "Today I knew that Steph was going to come in aggressive," Banks said. "I've watched him a lot and I just tried to beat him to the spot and stay in front of him to contest his shot." "There were a numerous amount of things," Marbury said. "We were going to the basket and we weren't getting calls tonight at all. Guys were penetrating, guys were getting off track. Things just weren't going our way." The Knicks shot 56 percent (25-for-45) from the field in the first half and held a 58-50 lead at the break but were done in by soft defense for the second consecutive night. New York gave up 123 points to Dallas in a home loss Tuesday and allowed 64 points in the second half of this one. "Our defense at times wasn't the greatest but I thought they played hard," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "You can never relax out there, but I thought Steph drove to the basket and we didn't get any calls." Jamal Crawford scored 25 points and Nazr Mohammed had 22 and a career-high 18 rebounds for New York. The Celtics were without forward Raef LaFrentz, who did not dress due to a sprained left ankle. They got strong performances from rookie Al Jefferson and Kendrick Perkins to make up for it. Jefferson scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds in his first career start and Perkins swept 13 rebounds off the bench. "Our goal this year is to win our division, which I think we're going to do," Perkins said. "We just have to come ready to play together every night and we'll come out on top, because nobody can really guard us. We're third in the league in offense, so all we have to do is come out and defend and we'll be all right." Pierce scored 21 points and Payton added 17 for Boston. Ricky Davis, Banks and Walter McCarty all scored in double figures off the bench for the Celtics with 14, 11 and 10 points, respectively. Knicks guard Jamal Crawford is day-to-day after Celtics guard Jiri Welsch stepped on his right big toe in the third quarter. Crawford had the foot in an ice pack after the game and will have X-rays on Thursday.
