Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- When the Golden State Warriors found themselves down, they rallied with a 3-point barrage. Jason Richardson scored 24 points and Speedy Claxton added 22 as the Warriors sank 11 3-pointers in a 109-99 come-from-behind victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. "We really came out aggressively (in the second half)," Golden State coach Mike Montgomery said. "We needed that win, the players did and so did the coaches. It was a good one right before Christmas." Trailing 54-44 at halftime, Golden State roared back in the third quarter and eventually pulled away in the fourth period thanks to 11-of-21 shooting from the arc. "We've been in games like this all season long," Richardson said. "We've got to continue to fight. This one is really good because it shows if we continue to work hard until the end of the buzzer, we're going to win the game. I hope guys realize that and never quit and keep on fighting." "At the beginning of the third quarter, we stopped working," Grizzlies forward Pau Gasol said. "They got back in the game and got that momentum going, then the crowd woke up, they got confident and started making all kinds of shots. We were not as sharp as we were in the first half." Mickael Pietrus scored nine of his 12 points in the third quarter while Richardson added seven as the Warriors scored a season-high 35 points in the period, taking a 79-74 lead to the final 12 minutes. "We could have easily folded in that first half but we just stayed mentally tough and came back from it," Claxton said. Golden State's outside shooting made up for Memphis dominance inside, where it held a 52-26 advantage in points in the paint. Claxton and Cliff Robinson knocked down three 3-pointers each. "When I'm hitting shots, it makes (my teammates) jobs a lot easier because then I'm able to get in the lane, able to kick it out to them for wide open shots," Claxton said. Troy Murphy had 19 points and 13 rebounds and Robinson scored 15 points for the Warriors. "I let Troy Murphy drive a couple of times, and that caused my teammates to get a couple of fouls, and I shouldn't have let that happen," Gasol said. "I should have been a little lower and ready to guard him, because he wasn't making any outside shots. I guess that was my fault and why the coach sat me down (in the third quarter)." James Posey scored 22 points and Pau Gasol added 19 for Memphis, which made just 3-of-16 shots from the arc and had a three-game winning streak snapped. Stromile Swift came off the bench to score 18 points and block a season-high five shots. "Golden State played extremely well," Memphis coach Mike Fratello said. "They forced numerous turnovers. We were very careless with the basketball. On one night we hold the Lakers to 72 points and here we are two nights later, giving up 109 points. They outplayed us. There's not a lot of silver lining tonight."
