Game StoryDENVER (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki made sure Dallas returned home on a high note. Nowitzki scored 23 of his 36 points in the second half to lift the Dallas Mavericks to a 102-88 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Dirk's 36 points were the most scored against the Nuggets this season. The previous high was 31 by Paul Pierce of Boston. Coming off a disappointing 113-100 loss at Atlanta on Wednesday, the Mavericks overcame a tough first half by shooting 57 percent (24-of-42) after the break to improve to 6-1 in their last seven road games. "This was a nice bounce back game," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "We're not going to get too full of ourselves though. Their two best players were out of the game." Star Carmelo Anthony missed his four straight game for Denver with a sprained left ankle and Kenyon Martin strained his back in the second period and was unable to return for the second half. "The back's not too good," Martin said. "We will see how I feel tomorrow morning. We haven't been keeping teams off of the glass and it hurt us tonight. I guess it is back to the drawing board." Trailing, 68-64, Nowitzki scored nine points over the last 2:15 of the third quarter, including a bank shot in the closing seconds that gave the Mavericks a 75-72 lead. Overall, Nowitzki went 14-of-25 from the field with eight rebounds. "I felt really good in the fourth quarter," Nowitzki said. "I had a few good looks in the first half and early in the third but the shots weren't falling early." Erick Dampier scored eight of his 13 points in the first five minutes of the third quarter, including a pair of free throws that cut the Mavericks' deficit to 60-50 with 8:05 left. He added 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. "We came out in the second half and played the way we are capable of playing," Dampier said. "We knew when Martin left the game they were going to be playing with smaller guys. We got a lot of boards and second chance points in that third quarter." Michael Finley scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Dallas, which was forced to make its comeback without guards Jerry Stackhouse and Marquis Daniels. Stackhouse sat out the contest and Daniels left the game in the third quarter after scoring 12 points in 21 minutes with a sore left ankle. Both players are day-to-day. "We got man-handled on the boards tonight," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "It's not like we haven't emphasized rebounding though. Injuries are a part of this, we need to keep battling and we will get through it." Andre Miller scored 18 points and Earl Boykins chipped in 16 for the Nuggets, who absorbed their fifth straight loss. Kenyon Martin will be a game-time decision tomorrow night at Golden State.
